Checking engine mileage on a PHEV

Any ideas on how, or if you even can check mileage on the engine in a PHEV BMW, separate from the odometer mileage?

I’d like to do intermediate oil changes on my wife’s G05 X5 50e, between the factory service warranty changes, but don’t know if there is a way to check engine mileage. The car has around 13k on the odometer and most of that is electric as the PHEV model fits my wife’s work, etc. perfectly. The car hasn’t called for an oil change service yet, but I’m guessing the motor has at least 3 or 4k on it now after a few road trips and me driving it in sport mode when I am in the car.

You don't need to - go by mileage AND time.
As in every ~10K miles or 1 year == oil change.

You are over-due for an oil change!
The fact that ICE engine may not run on every drive is a hindrance to oil longevity, not a benefit. Water condensation gets to sit in the crank case longer, and the few times the engine does fire up in probably never gets to full operating temps to burn off the unholy chemical contaminants brewing in the oil.

OTOH, if the car is leased, you probably don't care.
Which is why I will never buy my teens a used BMW/Audi/Mercedes that was maintained only to "dealer recommended" fluid change intervals.

Thanks for the reply.

I checked with my wife and I had forgotten she got the first oil change done at around 9k when she dropped it off for a recall. I had forgotten she told me that.

That said, it’s got an additional 4k ish on it now but most of that is on the electric motor. It would be nice to know what the gas motor mileage is separately.

Glad to know that my driving it in sport mode when I’m in it is a good thing, beyond being a blast. I figured that the impurities and water needed to be burnt off every so often. I plan on doing a Blackstone analysis when i do the first intermediate oil change so I can see if there is any difference between the PHEV and my ICE BMW motors.

I agree w/ the above, though I go by about 5k / 1 year. I don't put on many miles, have 2 cars, live close to work and sometimes bike in as well. All cases are different. I DIY mine as well so it's not expensive or difficult even if it is earlier than needed.

Not unreasonable to go 1 year and do it. If they say to go longer, consider it.

For the original question, the 1 year thing I think still stands (for now, unless Blackstone says otherwise) as a starting point. But - maybe a code reader would have more info, BimmerLink for example? Just a guess, not sure. Interesting question because yeah the motor can run a lot less often with the EV thing going on.
