Carbahn tune - oil type
Planning on doing a Carbahn stage 1 tune. I’m doing the crank hub to be extra cautious and if I ever decide to go stage 2.
What oil is recommended for a street fun car… at this point I don’t track the car. A good friend is doing something very similar but tracks his car quite often so is going with Motul xcess 8100 gen 2. What would be recommended for a car that isn’t tracked? Thanks! |

For every person that responds here, you're gonna get a different answer. There are a ton of oil change mega-threads here, just do a search. It's kind of been beaten to death.
With that said, I run Motul Xcess Gen 2 5W40 year round in Texas weather (I'd run a thinner oil if you live up north where it gets much colder). I don't track the car, but I can drive hard at times, but nothing like I would on a track. My oil analysis always come back great and I burn zero oil between changes. Good luck. |

Just don’t use Liquid Moly 0W-30 LL-01. From experience, it burn/evaporate fairly quickly for whatever reason. I switched to Castro Edge 5W-30 LL-01 A3/B4 and I don’t have to top off as often. I monitor my oil level in BimmerLink every time I drive and for whatever reason I was burning through LM 0W-30. I had to top off a quart every 3K miles.
It’s been about 1000 miles since my 5W-30 swap and my car is still sitting at 95mm (95mm was what I started at) in terms of raw oil level. By now with LM 0W-30 I would drop from like 96mm to 93mm in BimmerLink. Full is 96mm if you top it off until idrive says it’s full. 76mm means the car is a quart low. Fingers crossed I can go longer than 3K miles before needing to add a quart. |

No, that would defeat the purpose of running LL-01. The LL stands for "Long Life". Also, 3500 miles is a pretty short interval for a non-track car.

I guess 5000 with the caveat that it will require an addition of +1 quart is still cheaper and healthier than over 5000 with no burn. Aren’t the oem BMW twin turbo 0W30 LL Rated as well / anyway?
