Ticking on start up !

Have just changed from a 640d to an M4 competition 2018 with 17000 miles !
On start up there is a ticking noise from the engine that lasts for around 30 secs ! The car runs absolutely fine with no warning signs, oil level is ok . Is this normal ?

In a word, yes. You'll probably find it comes & goes tbh.
As long as it isn't evident when unlocking the car before you start it. If you get this, it'll be the valvetronic motor, which is not an uncommon problem. But if it's that, it's covered by BMW, there's a PUMA case for it, weather in warranty or not.
Enjoy the car, they're very good.

Hi I did the same move 640d gran Coup to M4 Comp. I loved my M4 but have since moved to "the dark side" … an 2020 Audi B9.5 RS4 Vorsprung. If I'd had the space I'd have kept my M4. Im sure you will enjoy it.
I also had the issue you described.

Thanks for posting! There is no noise from my car prior to starting and the noise level on the video is way louder !! The best way to describe the noise from mine would be more like a dull rattle until the oil has worked its way round the engine block and then it’s fine . I’ve another six months dealer warranty on it so I’ll mention it to the dealer before the warranty expires .

In that case buddy I wouldn't worry, it's pretty normal IMO.

I heard this noise in my car yesterday just as I unlocked it. Did not start the engine.
It lasted for maybe 15-30 seconds and then it stopped.
Do you have the PUMA case number for this that I can refer to the dealership? My car is now 5 years old, so out of warranty.
Do you think the dealer will fix even out of warranty?

Thanks.

Of course, happy to help. The PUMA reference is 64179484. I believe PUMA measure rectifications will be offered free of charge regardless of warranty status/age.

Update ! Car was inspected by the dealer and they confirmed that the noise was not normal . Top half of engine inspected and timing was found to be slightly out although within tolerances. Have no further information to date as I still have to pick the car up

My car also in for something similar at the mo. Ticking noise on a cold start, after the revs settle but before it warms up. Issue with the exhaust cam I'm told.

It would seem there is a PUMA for this - Exhaust cam torque set incorrectly in the factory. Can one of you please provide the PUMA number & post it up please? Many thanks. I'll get mine checked next time it's in.

Have we? If you're referring to the thread on Cutters, fair comment.
But that won't help members of this forum who aren't on there…
And when it comes to stuff like this I don't like to just repost or quote someone else, in case it's inaccurate.

Very true.

My post from cutters for anyone that finds this:

It's covered under PUMA ref #64203791-02 according to the dealer.

Notes on the documentation for the exhaust cam defect describe:

Labour
- Camshaft carrier Grooved
- replacing all fuel injectors in injection system
- removing and installing/sealing cylinder head cover
- support voltage of the vehicle electrical system / recharge battery
- verify customer concern & diagnose
- perform vehicle test

Parts:
- Profile-gasket x 1
- Gasket x 3

Work carried out under AUC.

The ticking on startup seems to get muddled with the valvetronic issue. Is it still the view that the ticking on startup is ‘normal’?

Ticking while running (direct injectors) or clatter on cold start (HPFPs) is normal on S55s.

If your engine does the VANOS tick when you unlock your car, that's completely different (and bad).

That is what I thought but one or two seem to be finding the cold start ticking to be an indicator of cam timing being slightly off?

Not that I've seen. Our S55 uses VANOS and Valvetronic to control duration and lift. Never heard of cam problems aside from the "VANOS tick of death", which was described above.

OP looks to have had his disgnosed as a timing issue and someone else in thread seems to be indicating similar hence my query…
