Why is this fix needed? Is this only needed if you tune? Is it needed on stock f80’s?

The data suggests that if you are stock, there isn't any need. There are some failures reported on stock cars (~3% or less) but if it fails, it seems like BMW will help with the repair as long as you're stock. From what has been posted, BMW will now do a full review to verify that the car is stock before warrantying work.

If you intend to do a light tune, then a CBC is a no brainer. If you are going ethanol, then the odds are you should do the full fix (Max Psi, etc solution).

I noticed that in the video there is no concern with having to pin the crank so it does not move?

After removing the stock bolts, mine did not budge. I would just not mess with it once they are removed...put the new hub in and start putting on the bolts by hand.

Follow all the steps on the video (btw thanks) and after removing the bolts, no matter what i did, I couldnt help the crank pulley from moving, so now I have to release belt tension. Should I be concerned with the engine timing or anything else? TIA

Odd that it would have loosened without messing with it, usually there's some grab to it

Needless, I replaced the entire crank pulley on my Audi S4 with no issue (larger pulley crank pulley to spin the supercharger faster). Just don't move/adjust the crank with the pulley off (and I don't even think that would matter much...as this isn't a timing belt)

Theoretically the crank bolt will "never' slip if the factory torque spec is properly maintained. I hope this install video helps and thanks for watching!

Truly appreciate the video - followed to the tee other than using an E10 socket instead of the 8mm. Very simple approach to going from underneath. I'd say it took me about 2 hours taking my time (picking leaves out of the front leaf catcher). Thanks again
Glad it's helped and those jacks definitely made it easier for you 👍🏻

Guide is very good, followed it and installed the capture plate!

However, me and a few others had the pulley shift after removing the original e10 bolts and where forced to de-tension the accessory belt to get the pulley back in and aligned with the holes

For curiosity, how did you get around this not happening?

I was honestly worried about it shifting as well but mine stayed right in place. Maybe just a bit of luck

Thumbs up Thanks!

Thanks OP.

I bought the capture plate last year but was so lazy with it as I thought I need to do it from the top.

This method of reaching up from under the car is much easier. I gave it a try and took me just a Saturday. My tools were hitting the fan so I had to run to the store to get some tools in sizes. Overall, I got it in and also gave me the chance to clean out the cooler.

How much rotation, in degrees, did you apply on the crank bolt?

Bringing this back from the dead.

Do you think this is doable for a novice?

Also I see a few people saying the pulley shifted after removing the e10 bolts. What would I need to do in that case?

It looked like close to 0 degrees from what I saw...think he was just giving it a yank to make sure it wasn't already loose, but would love to know!

Raztech can chime in, if it were me I would set my torque wrench to spec and see if it would take any and install the CBC.

i'm actually in that predicament right now. i was removing the last e10 bolt and heard a little "boing". used my phone to look into the crank hub and the bolt holes are slightly misaligned.

If the crank pulley shifts you can take the belt off and put the crank pulley back in position with no load on it from the belt. Then just have a friend loosen the belt tensioner while you thread the belt back in position

yeah, i ended up having to run out to grab a T60 for the tensioner and then inserted an allen key to hold it. the process in its entirety is simple, but time consuming if you're working blind from underneath.
