Looks like all other bmw cars are indeed going to benefit from i3/i8 lightweight technology investment. Carbon parts will be both, more common and more affordable, in near future bmws, and that's not just a 'marketing pipe dream'. I must admit, I had hoped the effect on the new M3/4 would have been greater.

For the European specification. I guess we'll see if the NA ones are just converting from kg to lb.

And yes, bummer about the 89 lb, however, net will be gain, at least in acceleration and not a measurable negative on handling.

Bummer, too, that the F80 is 50lbs (23kg) heavier than the F82. So DCT sedan is almost *140lbs* heavier than a manual coupe. That is noticeable, though not surprising.

Yes, however, viewing the glass as half full rather than half empty the new M3 with M-DCT is probably a full 100 lb lighter than the current M3 with M-DCT!

Didn't mean to sound half empty and appreciate the weight savings overall. Wish I could justify a 6MT coupe!

6mt sedan, next best thing

I hope my sedan will come in around 3400 lbs as I spec it (relatively light on options)

So I was reading on another site the 3,306 lbs weight BMW has been marketing, is actually a "dry weight" all this time.

In the marketing put out for the new M4 DTM car is states:

"The BMW M4 Coupé itself is a prime example of intelligent, lightweight construction. The high-performance sports car weighs just 1,497 kilograms when empty – that is a whole 80 kilograms less than its predecessor."

So I guess to compare weights to previous gen M3's, we need their dry weights as well.

This has been clear all along. The DIN weights for the E9x is stated in the OP.

Nothing new in the 1500kg weight is without driver.

BMW has all the time said the F8x will be 80kg lighter than the E9x ( not true for the DCT version). Just take any weight of a E9x and deduct 80kg...

Just like the E9x gen M3 is heavier than a E9x 335i....

Add one turbo, better cooling that holds more water, larger brakes, bigger wheels etc and the weight adds up... The F8x is the first gen M car that is lighter than it's predecessor and with a smaller gap between the M and the base version (the E92 M3 was roughly 120lbs heavier than a E92 335i).

The EU type approval number for the M3/M4 is:

e1*2007/46*0377*06

and

e1*2007/46*0377*07

These are the minimum weights listed in the type approval specs:

M3 DCT - 1560kg
M3 6MT - 1520kg

M4 DCT - 1537kg
M4 6MT - 1497kg

Both from the official country BWM websites.

Leegwwicht EU for the F80 M3 without/with M-DCT: 1595/1635 kg (3516/3605 lb
US: Curb weight 3540/3595 lb

Reasonably consistent and seems clear both include driver and fuel. Leegwwicht EU explicitly, and as discussed prior in the thread has 90% fuel and 75 kg driver.

A bit odd that the difference for the M-DCT differs by country... 90 lb EU and only 55 lb US...

F82 M4:

EU: 1572/1612 kg (3466/3554 lb)
US: 3530/3585 lb

What a mess. I have been under the impression that Eurospec models tend to weigh less, due to their less restrictive weight/bumper regulations. 0-60 times (0-100km/h) are usually a bit quicker for my G20 330i (and other models), and I was hoping their was a way to, perhaps, reduce some weight by swapping parts.
