Another Crank Bolt Capture Solution (Interesting for EURO members)
Hi all!
So, i was searching for a good crank bolt capture solution in Europe that could send it to Portugal. I found Litchfield (UK) and it seemed a good choice. But then i came across Philipp on Instagram (@that_nurburgring_guy) Is a mechanic ate Nurburg area, and works with Apex's cars and he told me to check Burkhart Engineering's solution, that himself install's them on BMW's at his shop. So i order the CBC from the website https://burkhart-engineering.com/54539en and it arrived today in two little boxes, one for the CBC, other for the bolts I'm going to install it this Saturday. I will keep you updated. Has a reminder, i'm running a custom tune pushing 545hp and 680nm/tq. Im running it for about 10000km now (6200miles) with no issues at all. But to be fair i don't push the car haha PS. i know this is not the full fix, etc, etc.. i just want to share my experience with another cbc manufacturer |

The Burkhart one has been out for quite some time. No matter which brand they all do the same thing however the choice should be Litchfield as it has the integrated hex on the snout so u can rotate the crank after the capture has been installed.

Yes, it's true! It's been out for a long time, but i found no reviews about it.The Litchfield solution is different and seems well thought, i decided by the Burkhart one for no reason at all. They all do the same. About the extra hex on the snout, i don't see when i could need that. if the crank spun, i need to replace the bolt etc etc and re-time the engine. I don't see any occasion i would need to rotate the crank with the capture plate fitted.

So i Just installed the CBC using Rotzy DIY!
https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1594892 And it couldn't be easier! The worst part was to pull the radiator fan up and in an angle to gain some space for the hand, install the cbc and torque it. I didn't take has many pictures has i wanted, because i was stressed enough to install it, but it all ended well The cbc has a nice quality material. the pics: The cbc and bolts Just before pulling up the radiator fan Its really needed to pull the radiator fan up and in an angle, because de space is just small to do a proper work CBC in place Done! |

next time bring the fan down. fan is no longer removed from top..
just curious, has anyone had a bolt back out? If you did a proper crank hub fix, would this actually still be needed? |

Not all hardware is created equal. Do your homework on tensile strength. We use 12.9 bolts exclusively with Stainless Steel small OD washers. These pictured are 10.9, and no washers at all. Far from ideal

Great job!!! How long did it take you? When you remove the original bolts around the hub crank bolt, is there any play? I'm afraid if I attempt this myself the hub bolt will fall out lol.

I needed 3.5 hours, but i think Rotzy DIY saved me 1h ahah I did it with the help of my mechanic. I advice you to do it with the help of someone (mechanic or not) Nothing will fall out Don't worry and install it. Its a 50% insurance improvement over the OEM hub |

At the moment it's a 100% improvement as there has been no one claiming a spun hub with just the CBC. 😛

The crank bolt itself will NOT come loose. There is no way that sucker is coming out.

You dont have to remove the fan at all, just remove the 2 bolts in the bottom holding it, the fan connector up top and the hoses/ plastic covers attached to it so it move up and down freely. Move the belt tensioner to the "free" position then push the belt in towards the block releasing any tension to the crank pulley. The job doesn't take more than 2 hours. Sorry for my english |

I believe this is true to, from what I've read on this forum, and searched on the internet, the capture plate has no reported fails yet. Well except one, then again this particular one that says it, is a vendor that sells a crank hub fix itself

I was advised by a mechanic not to use a CBC and go the crankhub fix route such as a 4 pin SSR. If it’s done right the bolt won’t back out. Apparently the CBC could potentially bring down the harmonic balancer if the CBC fails which is worst. This mechanic deals with bmws and fixes race cars etc, highly known mechanic in Toronto.

Also I'm assuming if the mechanic fits your SSR he is not recommending a CBC with it because the bolt will be done right? And lastly how is the CBC going to fail? It's late I'm hungry and to me the logic makes no sense. By all means get the SSR but if it was me I would fit the CBC as well.
