Winter tires - square setup on 20" 666M wheels

I know it's still summer but I'm already planning my winter wheel setup. I will be getting aftermarket wheels next year so the 20" 666M wheels will be used for winter duty. I'm thinking of wrapping these in a snow tire square configuration of 275/30/20 all around. I know they'll fit the rear 10" wide wheel fine, but will 275 fit ok on the front 9" wide wheel? Will it bulge too much or in any way be unsafe? I like the idea of a square tire set up. As the rears wear, they can be swap mounted with the fronts instead of buying a new pair of rubber.

If you don't drive in much snow the 275 is okay but probably a bit too wide if you live in an area with lots of snow.

BMW recommends square tires on their own winter wheel/tire packages. I ran a 275 summer tire on 9.5 on the front of my previous F80 so you can do it but it's not ideal. Something in a 255 section width would be better for winter driving overall and closer to what BMW recommends. I plan on running a 255 Bridgestone Blizzak LM32 on my 666's 255/35/20

There's a few of them on Tirerack in 275/30/20. I'm leaning towards the Dunlop Wintersport 3D.

Did you ever find winter tires that fit the 666 wheels? Tirerack shows no options right now, maybe it's too early.

Resurrecting this thread as I'm also in the market for winters. I thought about getting some for the 666s, but now I'm leaning towards 19s.

unless you have CCBs, id highly recommend selling the 666Ms or even the 437Ms and grabbing a set of 18s for winter duty. my car came with 513Ms and i immediately put on 255 winter tires (square). the looks aren't glamorous but they do the job and finding winter tires at these sizes are much easier.

I ended up going with 245/35/20 front and 275/30/20 rear Michelin PA4. I tried 275 in the front and it was a no go, was rubbing the inside strut as the sidewall on these tires are very thick. The shop where I had installed was nice enough to rush order the 255 tire the same day and it fit's nicely. No problems at all riding with this setup all winter and it looks great.

Good input. I assume these Michelin's were the Porsche N0 version? Any reason you didn't go with 295's in the rear? These are newer N1 models. Both have 245/35 on fronts.

I called bmw and they told me not to put winter tires on the 20 inch wheels as it could cause damage. I assume that's their canned response since they haven't formally validated any tires for the 20inch wheels. They are pushing their 19 inch wheel/tire package of course.

I posted this on a separate thread. Thought I'd post my findings here as well:

Michelin has available today the Alpin PA4: 285/30/20 XL 99W (# 10712)

There's a new tire on the way: Aplin PA4: 265/30/20 XL 94W (# 04620)

According to Michelin customer support, the new 265 (04620) will be available by the middle or end of this month.

I will wait patiently for now. I'll post any updates if i hear anything.

Does anyone know if the F30 18" Style 397 wheels would fit our F80?

According to Tire Rack 265/30 x20 in PA4 will not be available this year.

Who knows what the real answer is but I spoke with two different support representatives at Michelin again and they both told me the tires are currently in production and will be available for retail in or before November. Perhaps tire rack won't have immediate access or maybe their information is outdated or maybe the Michelin reps I spoke with don't know what they're talking about I guess only time will tell.

Makes sense. Tire Rack probably won't confirm until they have a shipment date confirmation from Michelin. For what's its worth he did say they have Pirelli winter sottozero3 in 285/30 x20 and the shipment for 265/30x20 is scheduled to arrive on 11/3. Another potential option to consider but not sure how good the pirellis are compared to PA4.

Anyone here putting winters on their 20" competition wheels? I'm thinking of the Alpins in 245 fronts and 275 rears based on what I have read here.

The biggest fear in using 20" tires during the winter isn't necessarily traction considering you're using winter tires. It's the 30 profile tires. If you hit a pothole or slide into a curb, chances are your tires will get cut and you'll end up stranded. You'll then realized that your wheel is also damaged and it will be very costly to get a replacement winter wheel/tire setup during the middle of winter when selection is pretty limited.

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm very close to work and, heck, if it's really bad I can just work at home.

I was told my Michelin directly that there's Alpin PA4's coming the first week in November for the US. Currently, you can buy a 285/30/20 99W (rear) but there's no matching front that technically fits the 666 wheels.

Coming in November is a 265/30/20 (front) in a 94W that matches the rear.

However, others on this forum have been told that the 265 will not be here until January.

I'm waiting until about 3 weeks into November before I abandon ship and find some 19's.

Probably a really dumb question. But would a 265/40R20 square set up winter tires fit on my M3 comp with 666m wheels?
