f30 340i xdrive or f82 m4

Hey everyone, Im new to the forums and have a quick question.

I curruently have a 2018 340i xdrive (non m sport) and im torn between continuing to build my 340 and go hybrid turbo / m sport conversion, with suspension upgrades. Or trade in after a few months for an f82. I do have to deal with rain and occasional snow which is usually cleared off the roads. With an f82 i would probably run summer and winter tire setups. I like to push my 340 around corners and what not with heavy throttle. With an f82 i would also probably go stage 2 and possibly occasional e85.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Owning a 2018 F22 M240ix m sport with MCS 2WR suspension and a F82 M4 with MCS 2WR suspension, there is no comparison between the two. The M4 is a far superior car in all aspects. If you haven’t driven a M car then it’s hard to explain the differences between M and non-M cars. I’d definitely upgrade to a F82 M4 with stage 2/e-fuel and not look back. You won’t regret the decision.

Not owning a F30 340i, and moreso the UK never got the xdrive version, I can only add my experience of the F series and M cars I have owned.
Im also lucky to own a tuned 400bhp F30 335d m sport XD, a stock F23 M240i and a stock F98 X4M competition.
However my stock F83 M4 comp just feels different to the others. Hard to explain but a more ‘raw’ feeling with suspension, sound, steering and the DCT box too. As others have said, the F series M3 and M4 is a different experience. Straight from the sound of the cold startup to the redline and high revving performance.
My other cars are probably quicker due to traction and mods etc. but the M4 is always the ‘go to’ for the better smiles per miles.
The B58 in the M240 is just sublime, IMO prob better allround than the S58 in the X4M. The tuned 800nm torque in the diesel 335d is also second to none and pulls better than the others at low revs. But the S55 when pushed and kept in the high revs in sport plus simply hits the spot.
I would imagine the 4 engine types I own can be tuned to achieve similar ‘noticeable’ performance figures, but how they deliver it could not be more different.
A friend has his B58 F36 440i tuned to stage 1 only and the performance is comparable to my M4. In a straight line only though.
Many a B58 M140i has gapped my M4 too. They can all be tuned with engine and handling mods. But for me the M4 still feels special.
The 335d is all torque related and pulls so hard at low revs it stretches most cars. But only up to 100kph then the M4 hits the sweet spot and just keeps pulling.
The M240 is also very torquey at lower revs but also superb at high revs.
The X4M seems light at low revs with most of its return in the high rev band.
The F83 M4 seems alive straight away with a nice low revs torque return and incredible response when you keep the revs high.
For gearboxes, the ZF8 is hard to challenge , especially with a stage 3 XHP as on my 335d. I’d swear it was quicker changing when in sport plus than the DCT in my M4. The M4 can be clunky and needs pre loading / pre engaging when in sport plus for a smooth initial pull. It does take some getting use to and is noticeably clunky when coming from a ZF8. However when use to the DCT it is excellent with well setup ratios. I have heard that the XHP does smooth out the DCT significantly but have no experience of this.
For handling, The 335d xd and X4M xd are very forgiving due to the 4wd. Put your foot down in any weather, point the car where you want to go and it gets you there quickly and without any fuss. Whereas the M240 and F83 M4 RWD take some thought to keep in a straight line when there is less traction on the roads (weather etc). Put your foot down, point them where you want to go and you will end up in the other direction 😂.
And that’s the fun of them. Takes a good driver to get the best out of them, certainly better than me 😂.
I will never performance mod my own M4, simply choices as like it stock.
However from some of the posts on this forum and YouTube vids of tuned F series M3 and M4 this would be they way I would go. Amazing gains to be had.

Get the M4. And then run a second set of wheels in the winter with winter tires. I think you’ll be shocked at how easy the car is to drive with the right tires.
