Driving the Fränkische Schweiz Area (North of Nuremberg)...

For rental cars they have these cheap ice scrapers that look like a small plastic card or the "Parkscheibe" or "ParkTacho" has a scraper built into one side of it. Schöner Brunnen & Hauptmarkt... Frauenkirche & Schöner Brunnen... Lebkuchen Schmidt - maker of fine Gingerbread in Nurnberg. You can also visit their factory store here and buy direct! Often times they have slightly damaged gingerbread for very cheap, in small little one pound bags for a few euros. No drive thru since it's inside a pedestrian area... but they do have a "walkup" window!  At the bottom of this corner building is the smallest restaurant I have ever been in. Must be like eight tables. The entrance door is quite low and then you walk down 20 meters of stairs only to find a small restaurant. The food was not that great... but then again I was last there some twelve years ago. It is a cool looking place. Restaurant Nassauer Keller zu Nürnberg (The "Wet Basement") The view of the Kaiserburg from Karstadt dept store. World famous Kathe Wohlfahrt. You can buy Christmas stuff here year round. Nurnberg has these century lookout positions around the medieval city walls. This one is near the main train station(Hauptbahnhof) Easter chocolates on display in Karstadt... one of my favorite stores in N. Müller Drogeriemarkt... a large three floor drug store that also sells lots of toys and model cars. Here are some Carrera slot cars - that are also made in the Nurnberg area. Its on the second floor. They also have lots of Marklin trains and accessories. So there was no damaging it. You can tour this bunker on work days by visiting... AND don't be late... bc they WILL close the Bunker door and you will miss the tour. How far is the parking lot from the Burgwächter? Is it walking distance? As usual, lots of information that unfortunately I wont have enough time to visit most of it but I'm sure other thread readers will have the chance to use it I thought of driving north on the first day: https://goo.gl/N1qjss and a short version of last years drive on the second day: https://goo.gl/qYnwqo On the first day, I'll stop in Nuremberg on my way to pottenstein or on the way back (depends on the time and my hunger  )Parking rates are between decent to cheep. Actually the triangular area from Bamberg(BA) to Bayreuth(BT) and to Nurnberg has the highest concentration of beer makers in the world. Inside of Bamberg there are over 200 breweries. I think in the BA, BT & Nurnberg area there are over 2K official regulated breweries. Further up the B22 is a nice castle/burg... Everyone calls this place "Steak on a Stone"... but they also serve ostrich, alligator, lamb and other "different type" meats. You can also buy tickets for the Sommerrodelbahn here and avoid the long lines next door. These are the main tourist areas of the Fränkische Schweiz. In these towns you will find huge water fountains decorated for Easter. Gößweinstein (or Goessweinstein) Ebermannstadt Heiligenstadt Hiltpoltstein Here is what the typical Easter(Ostern) fountains look like in the Fränkische Schweiz villages.... Gößweinstein And one last piece of advice... make sure that you have enough fuel before driving into the Fränkische Schweiz area. Think of one part bakery, one part cheese shop, one part sharper image and one part Neiman Marcus. This place is really cool. Also a must visit shop I think. Then go for a nice dinner at the Hofbrau Hof or any other nice beer garden in the downtown area. Just pack your purchases as carry one... when your at the airport to leave... show the ZOLL(German customs) your purchases and receipts. They will stamp your VAT REFUND form... then you get the VAT back a few weeks later after you are back in the states. German VAT is 19% now. About ten years ago it was only 16%. There is one politician who wears "22" pins and wants to raise the VAT to 22%. ugggh! Living and experiencing Europe has more to do with living than shopping. In Germany the prices for goods seem to be "set" or regulated. There are only two times per year when stores can offer "sales" for one week in February and one week in July. Winterschlussverkauf and Sommerschlussverkauf. This practice dates back to Adolf's time in power. Kind of like how the shops had to close by a certain time(6pm or 8pm and at noon on Saturdays). Fortunately, this law was abolished ten years ago in Bayern. In Bayern(Bavaria) all stores are closed on Sundays. And most museums are closed on Mondays, including the BMW Museum. Just landed yesterday in munich. Got the car in the evening and started my trip today's morning. One thing I haven't taken into account. That today is Easter. What a disaster.
The A9 was packed all the way to Nuremberg. Couldn't pass the 240 KPH mark. Average speed was around 140. The road to pottstein was also quite busy. On the contrary, the food in Burgwächter was very good and all this area is very old and nice to hang around. I ate a very similar dish to what I have eaten in sackt goarshausen but much better in taste. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. Will post pictures/videos when I'll get back Thanks |

kingikra looks like you enjoyed the Kochelsee area.
I'd love to hear more about your trip. The weather has really gotten more Spring like after Easter Monday. Before then it was still cold outside. Now everyone is removing their winter tires and installing summers. Dackel
