hi all.
Just wanted to get others opinions on this situation. So at the moment i have a 2013 E92, comp package, mostly stock except for wheels. great car, love it. 33k miles, never one issue, super clean etc etc. When i got this car my goal was a new F80, but cost etc it didnt happen. so i figured ide wait until i could afford one and when an F80 came off a lease after a year or two. so that time is close. So i came across a nice orange 2017 F80 with 8k miles. listed for $70k. so i checked it out. it was a "BMW executive car". After checking it out briefly, last night and test driving it, i really like the F80, but i wont go into comparisons between an F80 and E92 in this thread. But needless to say it was a sick car. fully loaded, carbon brakes, competition package, exec package, lighting package etc. BUT, i think the car was beat on pretty hard. the brake calipers were faded paint on them, the paint had lots of scratches and bad swirl marks, chips on the paint here and there, and the exhaust had lots of black stuff on it. maybe from lots of burn outs. the rear tires looked new thus making me think burnouts. also the brake calipers had bad chips on them from what looked like someone removing the wheel and the wheel hitting the caliper. So thats my thoughts on the car. so my question is, this car with 8k miles on it, im thinking the engine was not broken in properly. anyone here with an F80 think that would be an issue? i know itll still have a factory warranty, but i really dont want a problem child. Thoughts on this ? a shot of my red E92 ( bottom ) Update May 2019 So after a lot of hard thinking, I pulled the trigger on a used2018 M4 competition with lots of extras. Love this car!!! Wow so awesome. I love the feel, turbos, M performance exhaust. 666 wheels. Jas marina blue metallic. So nice looking. 8800 miles when i drove it off the lot. Ive already done a few upgrades. Rear diffuser, high kick wing, paddle shifters. Ill miss my E92. But this M4, so nice... Last edited by patrick smith; 05-23-2019 at 06:02 PM.. |

Skip! I'd rather have the E92. Use that money to further maintain and keep it in great condition....the F8X Ms are good but have lost their feel and feel disconnected to me. The comp package E92 is a great car!!!
Too many people switch cars too quickly these days. A product of attention span defects in the modern era. In the past people kept their cars and maintained them for years...I prefer that philosophy!

F8x all day. Folks who say it's lost their feel make no sense to me. I've driven exclusively M cars for the past 18 years or so and my current M4 is now my favorite of all. They are fantastic machines, and absolutely gorgeous. The cars are also proving to be as reliable as diesel trucks, very very very few issues reported. Compare that with the E92 along with it's suspect motor and it's not even close in my opinion.

NickyC; thanks for the input. really nice M4. love that color. ya i loved the F80, im sure its an awesome car. i do see myself in one some day. maybe ill find a way to keep my E92 and get the F80. that would be nice. My e92 motor has been bullet proof. i know some of the earlier models had issues, but mine has been a dream. with the MPExhaust it sounds amazing. i may pass on this F80 still undecided, but ill be keeping my eye out for sure.

Pretty sure they used this vehicle in the M classes/ M track.
I’d avoid. You’ll have problems if you do this swap. Look for a “better” f80. |

I thought the same thing until I noticed the carbon brakes. YMMV.

if you have any doubts about a car just walk away. there will be plenty more f80 comps popping up for sale.
your low mile 2013 comp pack is already just as much or more than 2013 M5s and 2015 F80s with similar miles. I'd hold on to it if it were me. You could also look for a 2012-2014 GTR, they've been holding value pretty well in the high 50 to low 60k range.

Sounds like an M driving school car, there was a thread about this and how to identify them.

I love both my E92 and F80 M3's equally, they both are completely different animals and have their own character.
The F80 is definitely the better ALL AROUND car, MUCH more usable power everywhere, steering feels livelier, the car just overall feels sharper and more precise, tech is also much better ect. One person mentions it feels disconnected, I wouldn't say it feels disconnected compared to the E92, I think the E92 just feels more raw. You feel the engine vibrations through the steering wheel, the engine note tickles your ears, the experience is more visceral. The E92 feels like a race car that was tamed for street use, so in this regard, it feels special. At the end of the day, they can both make me giggle like a school girl but in different ways. The E92, cracking off shifts at 8400 RPMS and hearing that S65 sing its way to redline is so satisfyingly good. The F80, romp on the gas and you get that roller coaster feeling in your gut combined with precision handling in a lighter and tighter chassis..unbelievable. All these M cars are amazing, when you have such awesome machines you'll have die-hard fanboys following each generation. E30 owners will say it's not a real M if it weighs more than 2800 lbs, E46 owners will call the E9x fat pigs and not a real M because it has a V8, E9x owners will say the F8x is not a real M because it's turbocharged. One day we might get an AWD M3 with a torque-fill electric motor and G8x owners will have a field day with that one. Sorry for the ranting, It's hard to give you advise on which to choose since it was such a hard decision for me as well. The only way to satisfy my desires was to own both. If it's your only car, I'd say do it and get the F80, it's the latest and greatest, most capable, fastest and best handling M3 to date. (probably most reliable as well) |

"Latest and greatest" is never a good reason to buy a car, IMO. It's all about feel and as capable as the F80 generation M3 is I think someone who owns an E92 Competition (original poster) is already owning the superior and more special car. I think stuff like the F80 M3 is good for people who are more into modern cars and laptimes and less into the classic features of cars like road feel and enjoyment. I have found it amazing that of the 4 or 5 F8X M3/M4s I've driven I've never actually found it enjoying. Can't say the same for E92 M3s I've always enjoyed driving them. Ultimately though different people get fascinated by different things so in the end it's all about what parts of driving are being prioritized.

Like steering feel, the definition of the "superior" car can be subjective. The E92 ranks higher for me in many areas, sound insulation, engine note, and ride comfort comes to mind. The F80 is superior in other categories for me, powertrain, chassis rigidity and tech are high points for me. A good friend of mine owns a GC8 2.5RS and swore up and down that it was amazing, he called all the newer Subarus digital, claiming they all lacked feel and character. When I had a chance to drive his car, it was the biggest pile of poop, slow and sloppy. When a person is biased, it'll definitely cloud their minds and affects their opinion. I wouldn't say I'm biased to the F80 since the E9x was my dream car since I first saw it in 2008. Quote:

thanks to all who posted. on one hand im almost glad this car didnt work out, selling/trading in my E92 would have been painful. i really like that car. just wish it had 150 more hp and tq. the power level is outdated for sure. ive had guys in newer stock 5 series keep up with me. kind of sad. but thats not what really makes me want an F80. i come from a Suby ( STI ) and MR2 turbo background, track days race events etc. So im really into turbo cars and setting them up for track days. Turbos are so easy to get more power out of. Not to mention, as you stated above, the F80 is lighter and more nimble, two things that are much better for track days. My E92 is no slouch, but intodays car market, the power is way under what it needs to be.
So at this time, ill keep saving my money, enjoying my E92, and at some point if it works out ill get an F80 and have both. i hope... |

Why are you giving up the search? I agree with not going for that car if gives you bad vibes, but there are cars out there that meet your spec and budget. Unless you've decided you no longer want to spend the money....
