What's a smaller, sportier, & lighter M3 replacement with only two doors?

I've absolutely loved my 2016 M3 and my current 2018 M3 CS. Now I'm looking into something smaller, lighter, and sportier. I originally got the F80 because I needed a 4 door for the family, but now that it's been promoted to weekend/track car, I feel like I don't need the 4 doors anymore. I'm looking for a coupe to have fun with in the canyons and on the track and auto-crossing. I'm open to out of the box suggestions! Some thoughts:
  • Doesn't have to be 400hp+, just has to be fun
  • Coupe
  • Nimble
  • Preferably used so I can make it a project car
  • No supercars, I'm not rich! Under $60k used preferred.
  • As much as I wanted a STI in the past, I prefer something a little more refined and "my age".

It's no secret that my current top choice is a 981 Cayman S or GTS. I've been lusting for one for months here on the forums. It checks all the boxes, but I'm open to suggestions and personal experiences!

So, you're looking for something like a...."M3 - 1"?

Subtract 1 from M3 and there is your answer

How about a baby M3 = M2

I strongly considered it, but given that it weighs about the same as my M3 CS, I think I want to go a completely different direction.

If manual isn't a requirement, new Supra? Seems to be getting great reviews, if you can look past some of the styling choices. I saw one in person last week at the dealer, and in person it presents itself much better than in photos. The rear is awesome, front I still need some convincing. But the aftermarket is adopting it pretty quickly and it makes all the right noises. I would be considering one and swapping out the front bumper for something more MkIV-esque once it becomes available if I didn't already have my R8 vert. But that car isn't going anywhere

+1 for supra. Highly considering it for after my M3 is gone. They're making respectable power already after being out for such a small amount of time only problem is the lack of manual

Checked one out this past weekend. Didn't let me drive it and the markup was $30k. No thanks!!! It did look much better in person though, and if it was a sub $50k car I'd consider it.

I hear you. I just specced one online for the fun of it and a blue premium came out to just under 55K. Find a cheap one way ticket to Chicago around October/November when they'll be begging you to take one, pick up your non-launch edition, and break it in on the drive back to California

Wait 6 months and the Supra will be selling at invoice. Or wait til spring for the C8 Corvette.

Brotha, now that the C8 dropped. You should be able to find a C7 Z06 or even a Grand Sport for a ridiculous price and unlike our CS, it's not modified for performance, it's built for performance from the ground up. Or you could cough up just a little bit more and get yourself a C8.

We had a E90 M3 and a Cayman S at the same time, the Cayman was so much fun to drive, I kept if for 5 years and then traded for a CPO Carrera S. The M3 is fun in a straight line when you can wind it out, but the Cayman driving the twistys with the engine screaming right behind you head is amazing.

911 (would need to be a 997.2 likely) or Cayman/Boxster would be the best fit here.

Why are people mentioning the M2 ? It's not any lighter. I'm assuming that guy wants something near 3000 pounds or under.

LS swapped rx7 gets my vote.
You could also pick up a r33 gtr.

If you want actual lighter weight and bespoke track chassis, go Evora

That Toyota drivetrain is unbreakable for track work

C7 or 8 Vette and new Cayman is my vote if I were in the same situation.

If you want a 981 just get it. Don’t let the fact it’s slow in a straight line stop you. It’s a fun car.

Get something older and pre modded of whatever sports car you like and go for it

Z4M Coupe maybe? Z3M Coupe if you're feeling nostalgic? Personally I'd love either one as a fun weekend car.

2018+ Audi TTRS. No question. Runs mid 11's at 118 with 3.4 0-60's bone stock. Throw a stage 1 APR tune and runs 11.0s. Throw a stage 2 tune and DP and run mid 10s.

Strip the interior, get lighter wheels, run some E85 and run high 9's low 10's. I've seen big turbo builds run 8's at 155 in the 1/4.

Also, that 5 cylinder sounds better than any M car that BMW makes. Literally sounds like a mini Huracan/R8 V10, with an exhaust.

I miss mine already

I like this idea, but call me old fashioned, I kinda want to stick with RWD and used for now.

If you want less of a muscle car(let's be honest, the F8x platform is german muscle), I'd consider either a ND Miata and a pile of r-comps, or a 981 GTS with the PDK and a slightly smaller pile of r-comps. Both great momentum cars with extensive aftermarket/track support. Sub-4.0s 0-60s are really only fun a few times on the street, eventually you miss winding the engine out and not hitting 30mph+ over the local limit.

Why the preference of PDK over 6MT on the 981? I'm debating which to go with.

I'm done rowing gears on my track toys, that's my preference. I'll keep a manual toy around('04 STI) if I want that experience, but dct for HPDE/TT lapping.

It'd be really hard to go back to missing shifts, risking money shifts, and not having the continuous powershifting that a dct gives you. 3rd -> 5th gear pulls in the GTS for example are just a freight train compared to my STI which has similar power levels.
