Solve: F8X M3/M4 Cold Start engine click/tick/knock sound
As title suggest, I have encountered the infamous cold start engine ticking noise. Previous owned 2016 F80, never experienced such sound. After taking delivery of a 2017 CPO M4 Competition with 17000kms(11000 miles), I immediately heard the S55 clicking noise after cold start.
I have searched all the forums and sought help from local BMW groups about this issue, however the answers varied dramatically. Thus I hope this thread can help other forum members how to deal with this problem. This ticking noise is not the valvetronic sound when you press unlock button or open Driver's door or trunk/boot before start the engine. It happens after car has been sitting overnight and only happens during 3-5mins after cold start. It will not produce the noise when car is warm. So, after dealer acknowledge the sound, service manager told me the engine from factory has not tighten the bolts right, they need to re-torque some of the bolts from exhaust camshaft. In that case, the valve cover needs to be opened and engine timing has to be adjust as well. It took them 3 days to verify and fixed this issue. All in all, never heard the ticking noise again. Some earlier threads have huge different out comings regarding this issue. Some members have their engine replaced, some changed to different brand/viscosity of oil, some have all their lifters replaced. I believed forum member "fabulousprofound" have already post the same solution that can solve this problem. engine cold ticking
I had exactly the same issue, cold start ticking noise - there is a Puma measure for this - exhaust cam incorrectly torqued. Sounds much quieter now the work has been done. I have a video on YT - user Fastmetro. If you have this noise it is not normal and will get worse. 2017 competition 9000 miles.

I posted the fix ages ago in another thread along with the puma case for reference. Was pretty much ignored. IMO seems to be a common issue.
Search for my handle and it should come up.

PuMA is a worldwide BMW database of all reported problems and most with the their appropriate fixes. I think the acronym means Problem and Measures management Aftersales or in German: Problem und Mebnahmenmanagement Aftersales.

Ohh ok. Thank you!
It’s just a knowledge data base system...not necessarily a recall or notification bulletin? Dealers aren’t required to repair items in this database? |

Does the OP have a video of what it sounds like post correction from BMW? I have the same sound and have an appointment next week to verbal judo with the SA. We will see how it goes, sigh.

Update: I took my 18' F80 M3 into the dealer, armed with information, videos of my car noise and the above noted PuMA number. After a few days, I had to actually go back to the dealer and show the Service Foreman what I was talking about. He heard the noise, acknowledged it and currently has opened a case for my vehicle. I am waiting for an answer on how they are going to proceed.

I picked up my vehicle from the dealer yesterday 12/8/2020 and the ticking is completely gone. The car sounds better with the hood open or closed but this was a long process thanks to BMW NA for being thorough with the repair.
I learned a few things along the way and those are that the PuMA system no longer exists, it has been replaced by the TSARA (Technical System and Research Assistant) system. So trying to get the dealer to reference the PuMA number mentioned above may not be an option when the dealer talks to BMW NA. Each vehicle will have to open it's own TSARA case to proceed with any repair. My 2018 M3 had a noisy lifter in cylinder 1, was the final conclusion by the service foreman. They isolated each cylinder and found the noise only occurred when cylinder 1 was operating. They replaced the lifters and rocker arms, reinstalled the exhaust camshaft and intermediate shafts, set timing and buttoned it up. Surgery complete. The parts list on the maintenance invoice is similar to the OP but has quite a few extras for the added work completed. It was a long three weeks, but the first two were getting BMW NA to approve opening up the engine. I hope this helps anyone else that has this problem in the future. My TSARA case #672595 MB |

I'm about to purchase an 18 ZCP with 13k miles from CarMax that is also doing this. Would you not buy it because of this? I really don't want to make any invasive repairs especially engine replacements. I don't even want the car at that point. Would you let this deter you from buying? Is it something that ACTUALLY needs fixing or more of a concern? I've read a few threads about people saying 2 of their 3 F8x did this and they did nothing about it ever. All was well.
I'm torn.

I have exactly the same issue. Do you know what the consequences of this are? Is it just noisy or does it cause other things besides the noise? And in the dealer , only the collar screws are replaced and torqued, right? they need torqued like oem? 20n and 90 degrees ? And why did they replace the gasket ring and buffer of the injectors? In the work of strengthening the camshaft there is no need to take out the injectors as far as I know. I regret the many and difficult questions, I have the same problem and it is important for me to understand as much as possible before I put the vehicle in the garage to fit it. thanks !! |

My car was making that noise. Took it to a reputable BMW shop and the guy said it was the oil. Long story short, the shit oil BMW uses coupled with the south Ga heat was literally baking the oil in my car and caused build up which made a lifter (cam follower) stick. He cleaned the motor with a 3 stage treatment and I'm now running a 10w60 and it runs and sounds amazing. Idk, something to consider depending on where you are located.
