Is the Competition package worth $9K?
I am looking at two low-mileage 6MT F80 M3s with a big price difference between them. At the same price I would take a ZCP model 10 times out of 10. But what about when there's a big price difference ($9K or ~$150/month)?
Here are my options: 1. A 2018 M3 with the Competition Package, full leather, moonroof, 20" style 666M wheels, power rear sunshade and rear manual side window shades, heated rear seats, Park Distance Control, Active Blind Spot Detection, Wireless Charging with WiFi Hotspot and Enhanced USB & Bluetooth. 1 owner. 17K miles. Mineral Grey / Silverstone Full Leather (I prefer the colors on this one). Asking $59,500. 2. A 2017 M3 with the Executive Package, Lighting Package, extended leather, 19" style 437M wheels, side and top view cameras, power rear sunshade, rear manual side window shades. 1 owner. 16K miles. Black Sapphire Metallic / Black Extended Leather. Asking $51,500. For reference, here's what's in the Competition Package: - Increased power output (444 HP, an increase of +19 HP) - M Sports exhaust system with black chrome exhaust tailpipes - Tuned Adaptive M Suspension (SA 2VF) with new settings - New Springs - New Dampers - New Anti-Roll Bars - Reconfigured driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+) - New Settings for DSC / Active M Differential - 20" star-spoke style 666M forged wheels - M Seats with break-through elements in seat back; deletion of lumbar support - Seatbelts with woven-in BMW M stripes - Shadow Line / black grill and badges

I was just in the same boat. Test drove a comp and a non-comp M4 and at the end bought one with Competition package without any other package. No executive or premium package. No tech package but it was the right colour combo and had competition package! To me it was worth it. Out of all the packages you can add, competition package gives you the most bang for buck! Also for resale value, a lot of buyers will want competition package and a "cool" colour combo.

I am seeing the resale value here. $9K more for cars that were originally $6K apart in price ($79,895 vs. $73,870). I've test driven the 2018 M3 Comp (right after a 2021 M2C) but haven't driven a non-comp. Does it feel much different?

I assume you're saying that it would only be worthwhile if the Comp car was otherwise pretty basic and lightweight (cloth seats, slicktop, etc.)?

Mineral grey and silver stone isn’t a common interior choice so there’s probably an up charge for that. If it’s 9000 alone for the ZCP, I would say no. Even brand new it wasn’t 9000, it was only 5500 to add ZCP.
60K is pretty high IMO for a 3 year old M3. |

I agree. It's COVID pricing. The price of all used cars has gone up. My wife's 2014 320i has gone up in value since 2018!
The wholesale Mannheim auction prices for 2018 M3s are $50K-$55K so I don't think this dealer is making a killing. This one only has 17K miles so that's one reason for the higher price.

honestly both are pretty meh in terms of spec.
The 2018 comp doesn't have the icon headlights or the CF roof. If the car did have those options then it would be worth close to what they are asking. The 2017 is a reasonable price for what it is. Neither color combo will be particularly good for resale.

The ask price difference looks like $8K and the car with comp package has a year newer and has full leather vs. extended leather. So it’s not $9K for the comp package on an apples to apples basis.

I will elaborate a little more. If you are planning to mod, then I don't think the comp pack is worth it at any significant price difference. If you plan to keep it totally stock then I think the comp pack would be worth it but 9k is way too big of a difference. I would say comp pack would be worth an additional 2-3k on a used car.

They are both pretty low mileage. The answer is what are you buying the car for? If you are gonna be driving the car a lot and modding it heavily then it really doesn’t matter. Buy the less expensive option. If you’ll be keeping the mileage low and maintaining the car in like new condition with only tasteful mods then 100% get the comp pack. It’s a much better investment

Full leather is part of that $9k diff too. That's worth at least $2k to me honestly. Moonroof kills it for me though

Looks like this comp model doesn't have the lighting package so headlights are the basic kind
