F80 sighting tonight

I just saw this a couple of hours ago in LA. It did not sound anything like a V8. The exhaust was pretty restrained sounding. #bmw #M3

They sure know how to select colors and camo to make it look very boring. The huge brake discs looks awesome though.

I've seen a few driving around. I saw an M4 the other day, but it was headed in the other direction and I was too slow to grab a pic!

What did it sound like? A 335i with Performance exhaust?

Nice catch.

I am sure it would gotten less attention if they did not have camio all over it.

Didn't sound like a normal N54 or N55. He didn't rev it much, but it was fairly deep sounding and definitely muted. I very much doubt it is the final exhaust. I think it was designed not to attract attention. Quieter than stock I would say.

Looks like the X5 passenger is talking to the person driving the M3.

Your 2nd picture does a very good job of showing off the flared rear fenders. The camo hides them well on most pictures but not this one. They are flared alright , nicely done.

Exhaust note - I know that the spy shots have caused some consternation. But having driven a 335 with the M Performance Exhaust, I can only say that if it sounds at least as good as that, it will be a winner. As cool as the S65? No, but then again, that's a 10 best engines in the world kind of engine, so anything is going to pale in comparison. Kind of like saying a Renoir isn't as good as the Mona Lisa, so it sucks.

I don't think ANYTHING can be inferred from the exhaust note I heard. In my opinion it had been fitted with a special exhaust which was extremely quiet so as to not attract attention.

I have a 1M with the N54 motor so I am very familiar with the exhaust note. What I heard was nothing like it at all.

BMW is going to keep us guessing!

Because V6. And not any V6, but 90° V6 as 2014 F1 cars.

IDK... I am pretty sure its in its FEP stage. Which means everything is final.

It could have some sort of selectable exhaust (kinda like the 911 with the optional sports exhaust system).

Other cars have 60° V6.

I6 TT was confirmed by whom?

Definitely not by BMW. Even those that saw the F80 do not know anything about the engine other that it is a turbocharged 6 cylinder.

90 degree v6 is only a cheap option used to turn a v8 into a v6. BMW will not be doing this.

Yes, a cheap option used by Porsche for their new turobcharged V6. A cheap option which Mercedes decided to ditch in favor of the even cheaper and more simple 60° V6.

Another cheap option that forces F1 engine makers to built their from scratch V6 engine with a 90° angle.

I love the F1 reference.........done for aerodynamic/packaging reasons ONLY.....next?

As for the others, yes a cheap option as used by Porsche to provide a 'baby' in the range.

What aerodynomic/packaging reasons do you mean? In fact those are the exact reasons for the V6 in the M3.
