Weird clunk noise
I was out this morning, and while driving the car on a flat road (not going over any bumps) it made a random clunk noise, almost the same noise if you threw a rock at a stop sign. At first I thought this was outside (i.e. construction site) then i heard it 3 more times in different locations when I was going to a store driving at very low speeds in 2nd gear. It happened while not going over any bumps and on flat ground. I had my driver side window down, and its loud, like a metal clunk
I went into the store came out drove home and didn't hear another noise. I have heard the car do this in the past, but i just chalked it up to something outside. I am unable to recreate the noise on demand. I got home, inspected the car, didnt see anything, shook the suspension a bit, looks under the car, under the hood and didnt see anything. Car drives perfect no issues other than this clunk. Anyone else have this? Ideas? Thoughts? |

Mine sounds like the mufflers momentarily scrape the ground. If it sounds similar that might be it. But I understand peace of mind having dealer check it out. Be warned though there is a god chance they will claim they didn't hear anything during the test drive.

I hear a clunk noise now and again when coming to a stop and DCT is moving from 2nd gear to 1st, doesn't seem to matter whether I'm in Auto or Manual S1-S3. That seems to be the only clunk noise I hear, performance of the car going back into gear when the light turns green is fine so I take it as one of those things you get with a production track car.

Do you have passive or active suspension (EDC)? I once or twice heard some rattling sounds in similar driving conditions (but on very potholy and uneven road) coming from front driver side, almost like the sound of a link or bushing is worn, but quick visual inspection turned up nothing. My one year service is coming up so I'll mention it so they inspect the front suspension. (Not referring to brake shield screeching or DCT noises)

The brake shields in the back are too close to the rotors. Take something and push the shield back and forth and watch all the little pebbles fall out. Im going to try to get the dealer to adjust them when i go in for service.

i had this for a few times. not a scraping or screeching sounds, it almost sounded like someone throw a rock at a mufflers or a metal piece under the car. it only happened the car is at low speed, lower gear (1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd) and shortly after shifting. Any inputs will be greatly appreciated..

Add me to the list. Happened on my 2017 M4 this morning. Occurred three times, can’t replicate. Sounded like muffler dragging. Definitely not rocks as one person suggested. F83, dct, competition package.
Did anyone figure this out? |

Happened a couple days ago as I parked the car, like something cracking or snapping within the car. Car runs fine and I've been pushing it. Can't replicate. I've had the rock in the brake shield and this is definitely not that. Disconcerting.

Does the sound come from directly under the arm rest area? If so it could be the e brake cable. Otherwise it could be pebble stuck in brake shield but that makes like a high pitched screeching sound.

Thats what mine sounded like. So there are 2 different sounds. 1) rocks in the brake shield, pretty easy fix 2) muffler dragging noise, still have no idea what it is, happens very rarely, but always when I am rolling slow, typically in a parking lot with lots of people and no other sounds, so everyone stares and looks

Sooo... did anyone ever figure out the metal dragging sound? I've been hearing it at low speeds. I think it might happen on uneven roads but might just be a coincidence as there's one spot where I hear it pretty consistently leaving my house. Every time it sounds like something metal fell off and is dragging, but it's a quick sound and doesn't continue. 2015 M4 F83
