K&N filter recharge

When recharging a K&N filter, how do you know how much of the red oil to put on? Do you put in on both sides of the filter?

I usually apply until the filters is red again. Both side.

Is this your first car that you have worked on / DIY?

Also, a little unclear as to whether just one side should be oiled or both sides should be oiled. I would assume one side.
