I got this off the mayo clinic website:
https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/2021...immunity-works
"According to CDC data, at the height of the Delta surge in August, fully vaccinated people were six times less likely to get a COVID-19 infection compared with unvaccinated people, and 11 times less likely to die if they did get it."

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-...e/art-20484859
Right, and I think I've read most of that before, though I've also used Canadian sources as well. But would you, or would you not, vaccinate a 5-11 year old child if you had one today?
100% yes. Instantly and without hesitation.

Just like I vaccinated my kids against measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox and i vaccinated my dog against rabies.

Vaccines save lives, both of those who would otherwise get the disease (or get much sicker from it) and stops the unvaxxed from overwhelming the health care system.

I have a good friend who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late August. His surgery to remove the tumor was delayed because local ICU's were full of the unvaxxed with COVID. Those people can rot in hell, far as I'm concerned.

If anyone is wondering what to get me for Christmas, I would love this!

https://gizmodo.com/what-could-be-co...ged-1848148657

A keyboard from a minuteman three lunch silo.
That would be cool to be able to use that, and watch "wargames" at the same time.

"Experts have been warning about a winter surge in COVID-19 cases and an early increase in case numbers indicate the next wave could even impact states with high vaccination rates.

Michigan, New Hampshire and Minnesota are leading the United States in most COVID-19 cases per 100,000 over the past seven days. Both Minnesota and New Hampshire have fully vaccinated more than 70 percent of their adult residents, and Maine, where more than 80 percent of adults are fully vaccinated, is starting to see a concerning rise in cases."

We are loving the Cayenne though, very very nice DD. Probably stating the obvious.

Oh indeed we had covid, which in our household meant milk rationing and while the only one who was tested positive showed no symptoms, it was scary. Millions have died, and while J has had his brain and heart repeatedly scanned due to his microtia as an infant, we've all seen the news on how it attacks basically any organ, we don't know all of his are okay, microtia has his ways and I'm a mom, it was scary.

So the quarantine time was strange: "Mom are you really old enough to have watched new movies with Bruce Willis while he still had hair ?" "Mom, I'm seriously trying to explain this at the seventh grade level, how can you cook if you understand no chemistry at all?" "Mom. I have to apologise to you cuz dad told me to do so. While the subject is easy for me, I shouldn't assume I can explain 7th grade physics and chemistry to a 39 year old. I'm going to stick to lessons I've been provided and today we are learning 5th grade history! This is so cool Mom, I studied a ton cuz you're a history fan and now I can tell you all about it at 5 am while you're trying to drink coffee (k, the last sentence may have not been a direct quote)".

So basically... I have kept my strong pacifist stance, but I admit the quarantine was not pleasant. The vaccine for the young was approved here last week for those with health issues and for those with close contact with people with health issues. While we have two cancer patients in the close family, and I seriously wanted to get my boys shot (not a typo necessarily), thankfully I remembered that we can keep our distance a bit longer and scheduled them for the Christmas rush, which will give us all more time away from my mom too. Also, there are truly sicker kids and with sicker family members who need it more urgently.

But I'm really fucking angry still guys. Our covid numbers are shooting up, and since the elderly have been vaccinated, and while we adults wear masks, I keep thinking that the worst I had to endure while fully vaccinated was a kid with one ear, once again postponed surgery and him asking me again and again if he was the one who brought it to their school, and is he responsible for his classmate losing a grandpa.

Well, as I told him then, we've done our best and we will continue with the effort, and get him the shot too, his younger brother will get one earlier since he was negative all the way through our quarantine.

"Well Mom, did I kill him?"
No, honey, you've done exactly what you've been told to do. At this point this is us adults just fucking up everything.

I haven't checked this thread in probably half a year now, I bet I missed a lot of good stuff.

And Lups - I emailed you as requested.

So, serious question for those with kids (and now I sort of see the answer to my question in my email Lups) - why or why would you not vaccinate your kids?

Here's my basic understanding of the shot:
- It doesn't prevent you from getting COVID
- It doesn't prevent you from spreading COVID
- It should prevent you from getting seriously sick from COVID / dying
- Followup to above, it should also therefore prevent the hospital system from getting overwhelmed because you shouldn't get seriously sick
- It is currently unknown precisely how long the efficacy of the vaccine lasts, if boosters are required, when, and how often are also unknown.
- The long term side effects of the vaccine are also unknown, though some short term side effects have emerged.
- The drug companies (at least in North America) are conducting their own studies to conclude on whether it is safe to use in children 5-11. No hint of a bias at all, probably should just accept the results of what a profit orientated company says if it makes them money AND they can't be sued either in the event something goes wrong.

If you can get and spread covid as a vaccinated person, I'm not sure I understand the argument that you are somehow harming others by not getting the shot more so than a vaccinated person who could also do the same? The best support I can come up with for this argument is that the virus should potentially last longer in a non vaccinated person, and therefore could spread for longer / mutate to a different strain. That's not a bad argument.

Not sure I buy that it protects those who can't get the shot simply because this this is a world event. If it were somehow isolated to a country / countries where if we got vaccinated, it would burn itself out, then I'd agree with that argument. But pragmatically, I see no chance that everyone is going to get vaccinated, therefore, I see COVID becoming like the flu. Still deadly, but more of an endemic that we learn to live with because it just isn't going away. And if that's the case, and vaccinated people can still get it and pass it, then it seems to me that everyone is still a potential threat to those who cannot be vaccinated.

There are of course a lot of conspiracy theories out there, some are saying that this could have an impact on reproductive health of girls...maybe, but I think the main reason this has gained traction is that we don't know enough about the vaccine to conclusively state one way or another.

But it is a new delivery system and so all that said - even though probably most of us have the shot, given kids have effectively zero chance of mortality from this, and we don't know long term effects - would you give it to your kids? Why or why not?

I'm honestly on the fence about it. Both my wife and I got the vaccine, but it was for our own reasons.
Oh hell I'm not in the medical field and while I did do my best to study the material before our girls got the vaccine, all I found was that they'd transmit it less, they wouldn't have a serious case if they'd be infected and with how many shots have been administered by now, the effects have been minor.
As a family we had a serious case of relief after they both got their 2 shots. In my email I explained why the other girl didn't get hers until 2 weeks from now and that story will be shared here too after I've had a night of sleep without nightmares.

Aaanyway. They approved the shot here in finland last week for the 5-12 year olds. Our boys will get theirs ASAP too.

100% agreed. If Masi wanted a race they should’ve red flagged it with five to go and allowed both to get fresh tires then go at it for the last 5 laps.

Absolutely. Like, max is not undeserving of honours, but lewis won the race. Pure and simple.

Also I commented on one of the G8X fender redesigns and stirred up the usual outrage….

Did get my booster past Friday too.

Went okay, next day had to take Advil to counteract the affects but managed to drive my car home from the dealership so, I call that a win.
