Exhaust Tips Hanging Low

Hi all -

My OCD is on overdrive and I believe my exhaust tips hang a bit low. What do ya'll think? Is there any way to bring the tips more flush to the diffuser? Is it simply an installation error, or maybe change exhaust hangers?

This can be a common issue with different aftermarket exhaust combinations and typically it all starts because of the center exhaust cross brace clearance. Sometimes, that cross brace is extremely close, if not touching, the aftermarket exhaust pipes, (shown in blue arrows in picture below) so people try to push the exhaust pipes up as high as possible to make clearance between the cross brace and exhaust pipes. What this also can do is by lifting the front of the mufflers/mid pipe, the muffler/pipe hangers act like a fulcrum and causes the exhaust tips to angle down, which is what you are trying to fix.

You can try loosening the two clamps that attach the rear section of the midpipe to the front section of the midpipe (circled in red in the picture below), pull down on that joint, and see how much the muffler tips raise. When doing that, the muffler should pivot front to back on the exhaust hangers a little. While pulling that joint down and holding it down, retighten the clamps and see what happens to the muffler tip position. The issue is moving the tips enough while still having enough clearance with the cross brace. On my car, even with the Active AutoWerke 'more clearance' cross brace, I still couldn't get my muffler tips aligned properly while having midpipe clearance. I had to modify the cross brace to give me even more clearance so my AA equal length midpipe would fit well with my MPE muffler.

Edit: also, you can try loosening the muffler pipe to very back end of the midpipe clamps and try to pivot that joint a little, I have just found there isn't a whole lot of play or adjustment from that joint due to the type of clamp used (not a ball/socket type clamp).

MinerelWhiteF80's comment above is definitely the issue. I had the same thing when I installed my single mid, had to keep playing with the clamps and adding more washers to the cross brace until my MPE tips were back where the should be.

Is there anyway to bring the tips more flush to the diffuser? Keep in mind that the exhaust and tips get extremely hot, and you may not want them that close to your carbon diffuser.

If you are talking about flush, as in moving the tips up on the Y axis, then you would need to adjust the midpipe clamps, as I mentioned in my previous post, to close the gap between the top of the tips and the bottom of the diffuser.

If you are talking about flush, as in moving the tips inward toward the front of the car on the Z axis (so they don't stick out too far), then you have to hope your exhaust tips are separate parts that simply clamp on and can slide in or out on the muffler tip pipes. There isn't a lot of adjustment forward/aft with the exhaust system.

Fun fact: after a track session of 20-30 minutes of running flat out, my exhaust grows in length by 1-2 inches and sticks much further out of the bumper

Also as far as hot muffler tips on carbon fiber, my e92 m3 track car has the exhaust tipes physically touching my carbon fiber diffuser and there are zero effects of the hot steel hurting the carbon fiber (it's resilient stuff!).

Thank you for the input guys! Unfortunately 3 shops have tried to adjust the height including recommendations from the above posts but no luck. I may have to look into buying a shorter exhaust hanger

Having the same issue after installing AWE track edition exhaust and it annoys me so much. Keep me posting if you find out any new information.

Mine with Active EL would “drop over time” in the sense that the clamps were repeatedly failing and I knew because the exhaust sounded bad on the right side and then I get underneath and see the clamp no longer doing its job. This was the second time so I said fuck it, I’m just getting the entire thing welded as my F87 is my forever car.

Had no fitment issues and more important no randomly exhaust leaks due to the clamps. For context I’m Active from the grain DPs, EL resonated mid and their back box.

update - i brought the car to a different shop and he raised the remus exhaust via the height adjustment nut on the remus muffler. i had other shops play around with that too but went the other way?

Anyway it's sitting higher and am pleased with the results. didn't have to use the polyflex exhaust hangers i bought.
