DCT replaced after 20,000 KMs !!!

2016 M4 DCT with only 20,000 KMs

Needed new transmission. Service Notes below. Anyone else have this?

ROAD TESTED AND VERIFIED GRINDING NOISE BETWEEN SHIFTS(DCT
GEARBOX). GRINDING NOISE IS PRESENT AT ALL SHIFT SPEEDS(1-3)
IN MANUAL AND AUTO MODES. RAN BRIEF TEST, NO RELATED FAULTS
STORED. FOLLOWED THROUGH TEST PLAN FOR SHIFT FORKS, NO
ISSUES FOUND WHEN PERFORMING CHECK. ATTEMPTED TO RUN THROUGH
TRANSMISSION SENSOR CHECKS AND CLUTCH CHECKS HOWEVER ALL
TEST PLANS END AS NO FAULTS ARE STORED. GRINDING NOISE IS
INTERNAL TO TRANSMISSION AND ONLY OCCURS BETWEEN SHIFTS.
NOISE IS CHARACTERISTIC TO GRINDING OF GEARS WHERE IT IS
POSSIBLE ONE OR MORE SYNCHRONIZERS ARE DAMAGED OR SHIFTING
FORKS ARE DAMAGED. FAULT IS INTERNAL TO TRANSMISSION, DCT
GEARBOX REQUIRES REPLACEMENT.
REPLACED THE TWIN CLUTCH GEARBOX ASSEMBLY.

That is really fucked up.

Did you have a transmission shudder accelerating in gear?

Try request a goodwill repair if it's no longer under warranty?

That sucks, BMW DCT failures are very rare I believe. But if it happens.... The costs are not pleasant.

DCT started acting up on my M4 3 weeks ago. Started slipping back into park from both D and R when in driveway. Took it into service and was told something shorted out in in shifter assembly and replaced for $1,800. Picked up and same thing, then other issues began. Wouldn't go into 1st gear at a full stop, wouldn't shift at normal shift points. Took it back from service and on the way got a drivetrain malfunction message. Service had it for a week, passed to "foreman' and called today and are asking BMW for an "assessment." Was told best case replace the mechatronic adapter, $5,000 or replace the transmission $10K plus for the transmission, no labor. ONLY 50K miles. No warranty. Thinking about buying a used DCT for $3K. Any advice?

I had the exact same issue with my 2016 M4 DCT last July at 27k miles. The grinding was most noticeable from 3rd through 5th gear. I did not receive any errors but could hear and feel it when shifting. I'm the second owner, and drive spirited when able, but just cruise much of the time, no track time. This started out of the blue one day, brought it to my local BMW dealer and they noted pretty much the same thing, stating the Synchros were the issue. They sent logs to Germany and they stated there shouldn't have been an issue. They replaced the entire transmission to the tune of $19,8XX, thankfully still under warranty. Thus far all is well with only about 5k miles on the new transmission, I can definitely feel a difference though, it drives much better now!

Damn. Yeah definitely buy used. At that price you can afford to go through a few used transmissions before you've spent as much as a new one.
Faults with these DCTs are very rare, so risk is very low with a used unit.

If you drive like a granny you will wear out the clutches quickly.

DCT is a sequential manual gearbox, not your typical slush auto.

Sounds like a similar fault I had and BMW did a full DCT replacement under warranty.

The fault was a faint and repeatable "clunk" when going from 2 to 3 or when in 3 and changing to neutral when moving under light loads. This was pronounced, repeatable and not the same clunk noise you get when going into R at a stand still or when going through the gears.

Premature Synchro wear was the diagnosis and they don't break open the DCT boxes to fix them - they send them back to Germany and swapped for a new one. Mine was around 15,000 KMs.
