Getting M3 serviced next week at dealer, there ok with my JB4, just wondering if they download any new software or updates, will this effect the JB4?

Just put your JB4 in map0 and it won't interfere with anything they need to do.

That's what I did, and all I will ever do. no issues yet after one visit. In fact, multiple SAs and CAs came out and admired the car and talked mods we had in common.

Bring my car to dealer for free maintenance. If they ever have an issue with my JB4 or other mods for any service, I will pull the car and go elsewhere.

Do I need the car running to change maps or can I do it with just the ignition turned on?

I believe the JB4 has to be powered with at least accessory mode (push button on but no foot on the brake) Why can't you start the car?

Put it in map0. If you have the OBDII AND you don't have missing cats, you should be able to unplug it and tuck it under the dash. If you have missing cats, don't unplug it and tell them not to unplug it. They will most likely get a cat missing error when they do scans and code updates.

But is it true they put some kind of code on your key or in some system so that another dealer will have the car on record.

I truly don't know. But I don't care since I wouldn't take it to another dealer. Would just take it to one of the several independent shops near me who employ trained BMW techs and do lots of work on BMWs.

Same
Just remove the JB before your visit
Once you get the car back, install it again

They have the ability to monitor history of some ECU variables .Whether they can prove it is caused by a tune is debatable because the boost values will show as stock values due to how a piggyback works.

If you are going for a regular maintenance, no dealership will bother checking the history of these ECU variables.

Map0 still locks up diagnostic equipment. We can't even read JB4-equipped cars until the CAN lines are removed, some dealers I've spoken with report the same thing.

That's completely false but the good news with the F series JB4 is that you don't even need to go to map0. Just unplug its OBDII connector. That completely disables all of its CANbus operation.

Obviously unplugging the OBD connector is simple.....But some guys think they can set Map0, that is false.

Furthermore, if the car needs to be programmed using ISTA/P through the dealer. It is a Different system than the diagnostic equipment. The OBD connector MUST remain plugged in, its actually opposite. If you remove the OBD plug to program, it will not read the VIN or communicate with the modules it needs to
I think there is still a misunderstanding. Let me rephrase.

For an S55 equipped with a JB4 you can either A) unplug its OBDII adapter or B) change the JB4 to map 0 to allow full OBDII diagnostics. With the JB4 on map 0 OR with the OBDII adapter unplugged the vehicle will behave as if the JB4 is not installed diagnostically speaking.

Also like I said, for programming, it actually works in the opposite.
Sorry but this information is simply incorrect. With the OBDII connector unplugged there is no mechanism for the JB4 to do ANYTHING related to CANbus or diagnostics. It is fully disconnected. If you unplug the OBDII connector you do not need to change the JB4 to map0.

Also your suggestion that the JB4 must be plugged in to the OBDII port to program the vehicle completely defies common sense. Either on Map0 or with the OBDII Harness removed the JB4 has ZERO communication with the OBDII system.

What if there isn't some 'elsewhere' to go?
Where I live, there's only one BMW dealer in town and the next closest is about 9 hours one way drive away.
At least the OP has two dealers to choose from...

Then that would suck. I'd probably tell them what I was planning and ask them if they would work with me. I'd make it clear that I am not looking to hide anything and that I am not asking them to cover any damage caused by any mod that I did. I'd be reasonable and ask them to be reasonable. If they refused, I'd sell my car, move on to another more accommodating platform and never buy from them again.

When you guys are saying "remove the OBD cable", you mean removing the whole JB4 unit altogether form the car, correct?

No. Just unplug the OBDII cable and let it hang there or tuck it under a the kick panel out of the way. Takes 5 seconds when dropping the car off. When you get it back just plug it back in.
