Car looks fabulous and great scenery. Amazing how the car looks even better there than in the mall parking lot!
Being from Metrowest Boston, would love to see the SG car in person sometime. Best of luck with it! |

Amazing pics!
And great ED notes...anyone that says that's MG has never owned or seen MG. I love the color, great choice, deep, dark angry Gray is what I'd call it!

Fantastic combo... SG so much better than MG
Amazing trip and pictures as well. Route Napoleon is definitely the best driving road in Europe. Just that by choosing to quit at Gap direction Col de la Bonnette you have missed the most outstanding part of the Route Napoleon, which is between Dignes-les-Bains and Grasse (120 kms without interuption of driving pleasure at its maximum) |

Great pics and beautiful car! Thanks for posting. I love seeing the ED folks taking the opportunity to drive the Alps while they are here. And special props for all the pics of the roads and passes. It was cool perspective to see them with a bit of snow. I've driven most all of the passes except for the Napoleon and Route des Grandes Alpes. Thats going to be my late spring trip next year. I think I would recommend a trip like this over a trip to the Ring if I had to choose. Enjoy the new ride.

Congrats on your purchase and trip! Charlie K. told me this morning that your story was featured on here in which I remembered reading it a few days ago. Absolutely beautiful color and I look forward to seeing this once it arrives at our dealership!

Awesome post, OP. I absolutely have to do a Euro Delivery on my next car.
Controversial take, but the F80 M3 is just amazing. Unique in all of the different colors, and such a joy to drive. I like it so much more than the previous version- purists be damned! |

So it looks like you went up during the "cold season": 1) you didn't rent tires for Switzerland? and 2) how were the Passes open?

Thanks again everyone. And thanks for taking the time to read the rather lengthy post

The week before there had been no snow in the mountains and the temps were above freezing most of the time, but our week was the transition week. I think that time of year you can get lucky or unlucky, in terms of the weather. So you just have to play it by ear. As an example, Grossglockner had snow the day before, and the day/week after we went.. but as I mentioned, our particular morning, it was warm and sunny so we went (Grossglockner was nice because there are live webcams you can check the current conditions on).. The Furka/Grimsel/Susten were similar, we just got lucky because they had been closed the day before. The French Alps were a different story, since you can check weather forecasts for the peak of Bonette and it was like 50 degress that time of year. So it depends if they have any overnight snow, and how quickly it melts (like I mentioned in the blog, it had been closed that morning until everything melted). In any case, the passes are open in October, but you have to keep an eye on the weather conditions since they may close if it snows. The earlier in October you go, the better. We drove a bit in cold dry temps (35-40F) and never had any issues. Some of the passes were driven in cold temps above freezing in the wet (snow melt crossing the road) and I never had the traction kick in, ever. I never felt like I slid, even when doing a hairpin in the wet, up a steep hill, in those temps. And the Susten pass (28F with slight frost) was okay, even though my adrenaline glands were working overtime. I wouldn't recommend below freezing frost/wet conditions (like the Susten example) on the tires when there are turns involved, but we sort of were forced to go that way anyway. However, if you drive slow and carefully, its do-able if you have to do it.

Awesome thread, really brings back memories from my recent trip.
I was on a holiday at the end of September, and drove on some of the Swiss alpine passes you mentioned (Furka, Susten, Andermatt). I drove on them on Sept 30, so the weather was still nice and minimal traffic. My drive wasn't as exciting since I had a 1L VW polo rental, but still had good time nonetheless. I saw that construction Helicopter too, it was really cool. |
