F80 2018 M3 oil change reminder light

Hello...new owner of a 2018 M3 6MT, Sunroof, LED Lights (pics coming, I know)...the car exceeds my expectations coming from my previous car (2009 335ix) and is a blast to drive. I admit the manual shifting aspect was tricky to master without the herky jerky starting in 1st and then 2nd gear, but I am supremely better after having it for a couple months.

On to the reason I have posted: My service reminder is saying I need an oil change in 02/2020 or 4000 miles, meaning I am well under the miles for the oil change. My question is, would it be detrimental for the car and mechanical aspects if I waited a couple months (April) to bring the car in for the OC since I am not even close with the miles driven (4K less)?

Thanks

RF

The service indicator reading 02/2020 is probably due it being 1 year since the last oil change. You should still be under free maintenance from BMW (and under warranty) so why not have it done. It should be a free oil change at any BMW dealer.

I agree - this likely means it has been the time duration the computer has calculated and I would get it changed.

You should. It’s been a year. But the free service doesn’t transfer to a second owner, so it will cost money.

Thank you all...I get that it is free. My thing is that my normal dealership I take it to is pretty far from where I am, so I was contemplating waiting until April and bring it there for winter tire swap and the OC; however, I have set up an appt at another dealership closer to me for this OC service so it will be done in Feb. Thanks again!

Will there be any harm? No.

Oil didn't magically become bad at 1 year.

The free maintenance transferred with mine and it wasn't even a CPO. I've gotten 2-1/2 years of free maintenance so far after buying a one year old car with 5K miles on it.

Or you can just reset the reminder on your own. But you should an oil change every year or 10k miles. Or even every 5k miles.

5K seems really early for synthetic- any chance you have done an oil analysis to confirm?

If you plan on keeping car a past 100k miles, then don't wait, if not then who cares

The free maintenance coverage has gone through some changes since your 2016 M3. Starting with MY 2017 the free maintenance period was reduced from 4 years/50,000 miles to 3 years/36,000 miles. Also, brake pads, brake rotors, windshield wiper blade inserts, engine drive belts, and manual transmission clutches are no longer covered under the free maintenance coverage.

https://www.bmwblog.com/2016/01/07/s...d-maintenance/

Also, the free maintenance coverage was not transferable for MY 2015 cars built after July 1, 2014. Not sure why your car is still covered, unless you bought it from a family member:
"The BMW Maintenance Program
For model year 2015 or later vehicles sold or leased by an authorized BMW center on or after July 1, 2014, BMW Maintenance Program coverage is provided for the exclusive benefit of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a new vehicle, sales demonstrator vehicle, Aftersales Mobility Program (AMP) vehicle, or BMW Group company vehicle from an authorized BMW center in the United States (including Puerto Rico). Accordingly, BMW Maintenance Program coverage, with one exception, is not transferable to subsequent purchasers, owners, or lessees. The sole exception to the non-transferability of BMW Maintenance Program coverage is that household transfers - transfers within the United States (including Puerto Rico) to members of the household of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a BMW vehicle from an authorized BMW center - will not terminate BMW Maintenance Program coverage."

15 CPO, March ‘15 build; purchased November ‘17; received remainder of 4yrs/50k free maintenance. Maybe part of CPO program?

Nobody has said anything about the warranty coverage. Some dealers can be pretty strict about the maintenance requirements of the car as defined by BMW and use that as an excuse to deny warranty work if they find that you did not performed the oil change in time. I know that it is beyond ridiculous, but I have seen it happen to a friend that was doing all the maintenance himself but did not have a way to record it on the BMW computers...
