Advice on long oil change interval for possible purchase
Looking at buying a 2017 M3 from down south with about 90k on it, lots of maintenance records but there is a period where it looks to be a 12k mileage and 10k mileage before it was changed. This was early on in the life of the vehicle. It has had the break-in change done at 12xx miles which is great and besides those two oil changes everything else has been every 6-7500 miles.
I'm new to M series so figured it seek the advice of those who own them, Iv had a few E46 3 series and been around these forums back in the day so not new to the brand just looking for some solid advice. Thanks in advance. |

I think a couple times of changing the oil at the manufacturer recommended interval did not damage anything.
Best practice on any bmw is 6k or so, but that's a best practice and provides max longevity Overall the f8x cars are very solid cars |

I’ve done thousands of oil changes on F8x platform. Max out at every 5k Miles. The more often the better. Since I’m a mechanic myself I do mine every 2k but it’s overkill. Only Oil you should ever use is Castrol Euro, Amsoil Euro, redline or Motul 5w-40 in hot climate and 0w-40 in freezing climate

Might of been during the free maintenance plan as the dealership will only change it when the CBS light is on. I think it's 10K miles by default.

If you are driving in the city a lot, stick to 3K miles interval.

I think that’s way too short for an oil interval even for mostly city driving. I drive in a lot of stop and go and my CBS still recommends 10K miles for an oil change.

I can also tell you from city driving my whole life, I've seen too many high strung engines having trouble with OCI over 10k km( 6k miles).

My E92 M3 CBS states 25,000km left on every OCI and drops mileage from that, regardless of whether I've had 10 track days or none. This is a further proof that the oil sensor merely reads oxidation, which happens very slowly for cars that are always up to operating temp to burn off excess moisture. You have to use your sound judgment to see which OCI makes more sense.

Get an oil analysis and add on TAN and you’ll have your answer on best interval. I personally run 3k intervals MAX since I’m on flex fuel and E85 kills oil due to fuel dilution and oxidation.

Did my first oil change and this is what I get, drain plug pretty loose, bunch of metal threads which I assume is a terrible helicoil job. Test out drain plug definitely stripped and won’t tighten all the way.
BMW fam what are my options here aside replacing the pan. |
