Insurance higher than Porsche Cayman and 911 Gts!

It's insane how high the insurance is on the F80.

I've pretty much ruled out getting a competition pack as the insurance is 50% more than a standard one.

Insurance on a 718 2.5 Gts Cayman is 5/8 the price and a 991 911 GTS is also cheaper.

Both cars are significantly more expensive than the F80s I'm looking at and equally if not more high profile.

What's the reason for this? Are there more crashes in F80s?

I would love a Cayman but I have a 3 year old son so need a car that can do everything.

The competition "pack" is what it is. It's a package, it's not a trim level. The insurance will list it as a BMW M4. They don't call it BMW M4 Executive if it has the executive package. On the G8X, it's a trim level.

The problem is the that the price of the F8X is dropping lower and more people are getting their hands on it and crashing it or speeding in it. The car was originally like 70K for a base model and people who had over 70K to throw at a car is at a different level and not a lot of people could afford a 70K+ BMW lol.

This also applies to the 718 and 911. Not a lot of people own these cars, but it's also due to the fact not many are made lol. My 992 TTS insurance is about the same as my F82, but my 992 TTS is almost 250Kish MSRP and my F82 sticker was like ~80Kish. Not a lot of people own a 911 Turbo/S and the people who do aren't daily driving them and aren't young kids with big egos lol.

I have a 2019 Toyota Camry where the insurance cost more than my F82 lol.

Also, a 911 has backseats. A 718 does not. You'll need a 911 to fit that 3 year old in the back haha.

I get that insurance is an added cost but if the make or break for someone is a few hundred dollars every 6-months I feel getting into any of these platforms is going to be financially prohibitive.

I think it's all relative to where you're coming from. When I had an F30 320D I went for the 330D next rather than the 335D due it having better fuel economy, the jump in fuel economy from a 320D to a 335D would have been too much. But now if I did it again I would go for the 335D as I'm more than used to the fuel economy of the 330D.

My uneducated guess would be that most people do not daily a 911 and keep it garaged while a 50K dollar BMW might be driven more, parked on a street more, prone to higher theft rates and accidents, etc.

The Model 3 Performance is significantly cheaper to insure for me despite it being faster at legal speeds and it also is daily sedan. I guess a lot of boy racers are crashing M3s.

I think there are at least a couple of reasons. The biggest one, as already pointed out (and I’m paraphrasing), is that as the price of the platform drops it becomes more accessible to big dummies who will daily drive it and are ready to go out and regularly do dumb things in it.

I’d have to go back to look, but here in the U.S. I don’t recall a huge difference between my F83 and my wife’s Volvo XC60. Maybe a few hundred dollar every 6 mos. The bigger shock was the amount year over year increase from my insurer which made me switch insurers. Here in the U.S. insurance premiums have been rising very rapidly and at different times for different insurers, based on the timing of regulator approvals of rate increases proposed by the insurers. So the other thing is to make sure you are comparing current quotes from the same insurer when pricing insurance for different cars.

My 2015 F80 non-comp's insurance premium is roughly $50 a year more than my wife's 2022 X3 30i. A lot depends on where you live/where the car is garaged/parked, whether you live in an urban or suburban area, how many miles a year you drive, whether or not it's used to commute to work or school or used for your employment or just for "pleasure", and how many miles a year you put on it. As I'm retired and keep my cars in my garage, I suspect I have lower premiums than people who put a lot of miles on their car commuting every day.

The ‘16 f82 has the lowest premium of all of our cars at $700/year. Our two ‘09 & ‘12 e92 M3s and ‘18 m240ix are all ~$100/year more than the f82. The highest is our ‘20 g20 330ix which is ~$200/year more than the f82.

Dude insurance has too many variables involved and it’s all relative.

I will say though that more people are getting into F8X as they become more affordable and popular as it seems good sports car platforms are dying… and crashing them so 🙃

Hopefully OP doesn't use his BP username when requesting insurance prices.

My F90 M5 is cheaper than my F82 CS. Same coverage amount and drivers. Then again it is easier to get in trouble with the CS then the M5 which is why I love it.

More people doing stupid things with their now cheaper M3s than those that own a 911 GTS. My guess is credit quality, age, responsibilities and liabilities are higher with the latter so less prone to driving like an asshole on the street. Plus they drive that car less as it’s not a DD.

You want true insanity? My 2016 M4's insurance is cheaper than what I paid for the same coverage for a 2015 Fiat 500e lease. So if you're considering an EV in the name of saving money, make sure you get an insurance quote first!

I noticed this as well. Came from a 2022 X3M competition to a 2020 M4 competition and insurance went up $390/yr. I was expecting it to go down! Ah well. I'd still do it again.

Thinking about going the opposite way. Why did you decide to go to F82?

Very simple in the UK - Based on Age and Location

Insurance for these cars is very reasonable but as the car value has fallen younger people can afford it which means yes insurance is expensive comes up more.

I’ve seen more kids in their late 20s buying these cars but sadly not having funds to maintain properly and insure.

This is my own personal opinion so take that that for what it is.

I came from a 2018 M2 w/ DCT. I’ve also owned a 335is DCT, an E46 M3 SMG, M240i auto so I have experience. Really loved that M2 but thought I’d be happier with the increased power, awd and tech.

My thoughts on the 2022 X3MC:

- Power was incredible above 3000rpm. Below that it was gutless. The transmission is very quick to try and downshift to make up for it.

- The suspension is INCREDIBLY harsh. The roads in north Texas are probably way different than the roads in Germany. Here they are horrible. I put MSS springs on it which helped but it was still awful. The biggest problem is with uneven slab seams in the road. I always joked that if I ran over a mouse turd or a dime, I’d definitely know.

- I’m a bigger guy and the thigh bolsters are not far apart and are nearly vertical. My girlfriend is normal sized or less and she hated the aggressive seats. Any more than 30-45 minutes in those seats were unpleasant. Cooled seats were nice though!

- The engine sound isn’t very good. Pretty quiet stock so I added an AA midpipe which was insanely raspy. Sounded awful. I switched to a full Valvetronic with a single midpipe which sounded better but if you really romp on it, still sounds like ass.

- Transmission. All the stuff I have read about the new automatic replacement for the DCT said it was really good. Close to DCT in performance. It is NOT. I hated the trans and the drivelogic programming. Slow inconsistent shifts in manual mode. In auto mode it aggressively downshifts to make up for the complete lack of power under 3k rpm’s but then it holds the low gear for way too long. Like I just wanted to speed up a little, I’m not going ape s**t here you can go ahead and downshift now. It really was annoying. Bottom line for me the auto can’t touch the DCT period. I always drove it in automatic mode because manual was just no fun. Now back in a DCT I’m in heaven again.

- if you get an X3 with the driver assist pro option, there is a camera behind the rear view mirror that is crucial to the that front viewing safety systems. There is a serious flaw in this implementation. The camera is mounted to the windshield using very small thin plastic tabs. Over a short amount of time these little plastic tabs can warp or break when they get very hot like it gets here in Texas summers. I have to park uncovered at work. So extremely hot inside the cabin. Problem is if these tabs break you have to replace the entire f*****g windshield because those plastic tabs are windshield integrated. Long story short it happened to me and cost me $2k to fix. Check the X3M forums. This is a known issue. If you want to know more check my post history. I’m already getting pissed off just typing this so I’m done with this topic.

I think that covers the major complaints I had. Typed this on my phone so expect autocorrect errors.

I hope that helps.

I have Allstate-

I pay $82/mo for my 2018 Macan S, and $120/mo for my 2015 M4.

Interestingly, I also pay $130/mo for my wife's 2014 Camry.
