2016 M3 with 8000 miles on it. Replaced driver side front strut for creaking noises when turning and some bushing or bracket on the passenger side and then needed wheel alignment.

REplaced the DCT and carbon fiber drive shaft at 25K miles (early production ‘17 CP M3). I want to say the total cost would have been in the $18k neighborhood, including labor, but I could be wrong. After having issues with the DCT in my E90 M3, I made sure to purchase the extended warranty when I picked up the current car.

At just ~1200 miles had the alternator replaced by the dealer... it was squealing... probably would've cost ~$1,000

14k+ miles on the clock and 1.5 years in ('17 M3 ZCP) with no issues other than the occasional rock squeal from the rear brake shields (not enough for me to get them replaced yet though). I have never purchased an extended warranty before, but considering it now for this car in the future (and for my wife's car - a CPO'ed 2013 X3). But if I do, I will strongly consider an aftermarket company as they are priced more competitively than the dealer ones, with lots of flexibility with coverage plans and payment options.
Also, make sure you read the fine print carefully. Pretty much no extended warranty, even from the dealer, is a true "bumper to bumper" new car warranty that covers everything on the car - there will be some component coverage exceptions and it seems many people miss this fact. I am ok with that since pretty much all extended warranties cover the main $$ stuff that you would be concerned with. Also remember that maintenance (oil changes, brakes, suspension, etc) IS NOT part of an extended warranty. There are separate programs for that stuff, but IMO are not worth it - you can DIY (which I plan to do most of the time) or find a good Indy shop for that kind of work. While it is difficult if not impossible to predict a manufacture defect, doing proper maintenance significantly contributes to the long term reliability of any car, especially complex ones like the F8X. You want to increase the chances of having a car last a long time trouble free? Do the maintenance (to include at more frequent intervals than what the factory says in many cases).

Stay on top of your basic fluid maintenance IE: Oil, brake, transmission and so on. I think you will be happier in the long run, I know I am. But that's me. Do not follow the BMW recommended interval changes, do them sooner. I use a very reliable independent shop that deals just with German cars.
So in short pay as you go rather than pay BMW a huge lump sum and asking for a major catastrophe. Last edited by bmrwrld; 05-21-2018 at 12:07 PM.. |

New 6MT trans @ ~5k miles.
Took 6 weeks as they had to source the trans straight from the assembly line.

Dropped it off at dealer and they found metal shavings in fluid. Replaced under warranty. I suppose they sent it somewhere for further investigation, but I have no idea what ended up happening.

32k miles my rear diff fell off the driveshaft when cornering at low speed and accelerating.
It actually happened a second time, and they ended up replacing the entire driveshaft and the rear diff that time around. If I remember correctly the bill for the first warrantied fix was in the realm of $2,500. The second one with parts and labor was well over 8k. *My car was part of a bulletin in which the rear diffs were potentially under lubricated from the factory, so this could very easily have been related. I picked up my car in Munich in late October, so I am attributing this to drunk bavarians enjoying their annual beer festival.

I dont know the details just the price differences but did a quick search and found some good info. https://www.bmwusa.com/content/dam/b...t_Brochure.pdf https://test.resource.bmwusa.com/Pdf...87fd99957.arox Powertrain plus is the best bet , other coverages are some what minor if your into perfection. Better safe than sorry for sure. Heard some people negotiate a cheaper price but not much, think someone got 500 or 1000 off the msrp for extended warranty.
