Diff "rumble" seems to be solved by GTS diff coding

My F80 had a "rumble" / low frequency vibration coming from the differential under heavy load, low-rpm. Could be perceived more in 4th gear and above.

My 335i with aftermarket LSD actually did the same thing (including the 1st gear clunk - both cars are 6MT). I remember the LSD manufacturer saying it had to do with an adjustment of the differential, and was "normal" NVH given the amount of torque...

I recently had the GTS differential coding performed, and now it is completely gone and smooth.

I've seen a few complaints about this - and was actually planning to take it into the dealer (and expecting them to say it's normal). So wanted to post this up in case someone else is searching for diff vibration or noise.

It could be that the vehicle uses the rear brakes and E-Diff to modulate the power distribution. It's part of the DSC/MDM system which sounds like a bag of rocks moving about, when active.

By coding the GTS DSC mapping, it being more liberal; allows for more slippage, thus reducing the rumbling sensation you're used to feeling with the standard Diff coding.

How/where can you get this coding done for the diff?

In the DSC Module:

set to: ECE

Not available in BimmerCode. Maybe E-Sys. Or try one if the remote coders in the classified section.

My car makes this same noise. But it does it going straight which means diff is not really engaged, so, I can't see diff software resolving this.

Note that all of my E46 M3s did the same thing but to a lesser degree.

Interesting, though.

Thanks. I don't remember seeing the DSC module in Carly for BMW, either. I'll see what I can find in E-Sys.

That simple? Seriously?

There are other perimeters that could be changed also to match the EURO F80/82 settings, such as eliminating the the US restrictive TPMS sensor's heat threshold but to alter just the slip angles and not mess with any other settings, that's what C_Laenderkennung is for.

With anything to do with DSC system, I try to discourage people from interfering with such an intricate system. This is not some minor feature that's implemented just for convenience but could mean life or death, if I could be so dramatical.

I had Alex from Alpine do my diff and DCT coding - really happy with the results.
