Yep, my 14 year old son was in the front seat with me and he said "Dont you know how to drive, Dad?"

First thing he told his mother when we got home, instead of how incredible the car was, was "Mom, Dad made the car jerk all over the place".

This is a BMW AT thing. The ZF 8-speed and the old 6-speed AT was prone to the same thing in D mode if you weren't used to the car. Mash the throttle => nothing and then a hard shove => back off => jerk and so on. The DCT in the E90 M3 was actually much less prone to this, happened to me maybe twice the first month and never again over ~4 years since the "right foot" adapts. I heard the first MYs had more of it than the later MYs.

Compare this to most other ATs where you can just man handle the throttle and always have a smooth take off it's a bit of adjustment. Our Cayenne's Toyota 8-speed AT is like this, always smooths things out and can just be handled anyway you like and responds with smooth acceleration. However when you have adjusted to the BMW autos/DCT it's not much of an an issue if any IMO. That said, judging from the 6 MT the F8X is "worse" than most in this aspect since even the 6 MT requires some finess not to buck and jerk at low speed. I think much of the cause is the new LSD and how it operates at low speed.

so you told the super computer controlling your transmission to shift as fast as possible and make your gas pedal as sensitive as possible plus wait until redline before shifting then you gingerly drive it? i don't think it uses AI yet or has a sarcasm routine. would be awesome if it did though. haha. seriously i remember doing that first time with DCT in my E90. that was the day i decided i should just stick to a manual as long as possible. DCT on the new cars is the smoothest shifting i have felt. to me its too smooth. bring back good 'ol SMGII. that thing felt like a manual with a missing clutch pedal. automatic mode was a joke. felt like i was a passenger in the drivers seat. damn miss that car now.

I had this problem with my E46 M3. Interestingly enough, this has not happened to me with my new M3, in any of the throttle response setting. Probably because the new F80 M3's throttle response is less sensitive than my old car.

I think it happens more easily if you are sitting further away from the pedals because your right leg is more extended and is harder to apply consistent and forceful pressure to the gas pedal.

A proper (i.e. closer to the pedals) sitting position should help.

Happens to me too got it in the E92 as well. I think it's just the throttle being very sensitive in sport+ mode you just have to feather it a little bit I remember not noticing it after a month or two in the old car

DCT jerkiness on takeoff?

The absolute worst thing about the Dct m4 is that 4600 miles in it still jerks off the line when I really press the throttle. Anyone else still having that problem?

Screw the takeoff. The thing that pisses me off the most is when the car puts itself on 3rd gear going around 19-26mph and when I let go of the throttle it starts jerking like a maddog. To top it off the girl I was with was like. What's wrong with your car??? My honda doesn't do that >_> Grrr....

I think some folks need driving lessons. I can make mine get a little jerky at low speeds, but I really have to try hard.

A friend claims his does it when the tranny is cold. I've done it a couple times but just think it's my foot bouncing on the throttle.

When it does happen I hurry up and shift to 2nd.

If you slam on the throttle with the car stationnary, DCT will attempt a clutch drop launch (raise the RPM and drop the clutch). If DSC in on (or in MDM), it will cut back on the engine as soon as it sense wheel spin. This will cause jerkiness.

A trick is to give a slight touch on the throttle just before you want to take-off to have DCT engage the clutch. Once you feel the clutch has taken, you can aggressively roll on the throttle and get a smooth launch.

This was the case on my DCT F92 M3 and is the same with my DCT M4.

I came in here expecting to see spaceships ("takeoff" in your thread title). Needless to say, I'm disappointed.

if you have the throttle response set to sport plus and drive gingerly in low speed thats your problem. set it to comfort instead. nothing wrong with the car.

This.

Despite some people calling it an "automatic" it is not an automatic transmission. It is an automated manual transmission. It has no torque converter, and the internal gears are much more closely related to a traditional manual than an automatic.

Therefore, you cannot expect it to drive like an automatic. Oh sure, it'll shift without your intervention, but that's where the similarities stop. There's a clutch in there (well, two, of course) engaging the gears, not s torque converter. You have to drive it like you would a manual off the line. Just without the left foot involvement.

I'm new to DCT, and notice the same. Slowly getting used to it, and loving it.
