Exclamation F82 M4 buying advice !!!

Hi guys

New member here, I'm interested in this F82 M4 for sale by a dealer. The car is pretty base, mineral grey, 25000km and is asking $46000. I think the price is pretty low compare to other M4s on the market. However, there is a [B]$18000 collision claim (left front corner) on Carfax and 0 service history on Carfax (either the previous owner didn't do any oil change up to 25000km or it was done through an indy).

Question is, do you guys think this is a good buy? I feel like the big collision claim is a big eye sore in the future when I decide to sell the car. Also how big of a damage would it be to have a 18k bill? I'm assuming the parts and paint really expensive or the entire front end was obliterated.

Thanks.

Hey man welcome!

I have a 2016 mineral grey. Are you planning to buy the car and have fun with it? If so I would say go for it. Cars are rarely a good investment.

You'd be surprised how easily you can rack up $18k on a collision repair, especially using OEM parts....If the airbags were deployed however.....I would be much more concerned.

Other than the crank hub issue, this is one of my all time favorite cars I've ever owned.

I'm far from an expert, but good luck!

What year is it?

You usually won't see much (or useful) service history stuff with CarFax so ignore that. And ya, you can quickly get to a bill of $18K from an accident with cars these days, but still, that's a lot. You don't know exactly how bad it was, who did the repair work, etc, etc. I'd personally stay away from it just because of this but that's just me.

If you don't really mind that aspect of it, I'd see if your local BMW dealership can give you the service history on it, do an inspection and go from there.

It's going to be my daily. Went to check out the car today. Body looks good, paint match original paint except the hood and bumper gap is slightly bigger than other M4. Headlight have a little of condensation. The car drove real nice. I still have to put a lot of thoughts into this. Never bought a car with this much claim before.

The car in question is 2016. I'm waiting on the service history. Everything tick good on the inspection report, tires and brakes are almost new. So I'm not sure where else to look at.

Talked to a friend of mine who got into an accident and needed the suspension, linkage, steering rack replaced and that cost 7k. He skipped out on repainting the bumper and fixing the wheels. So I'm assuming 18k would be headlight, front bumper, fender, suspension parts.

Should I request an inspection from the current dealer? Or is it better to get it inspected from 3rd party shop?

Pass - you mentioned it - if / when you sell , you will take it between the eyes.

Take your time and find one without a claim against it.

I would pass because of the accident. I would not fuss too much on mileage. As long as a car is looked after, mileage should not be a big deal.

Key things to look out for are accidents, service history including preventative maintenance and wear/tear (other than usual that comes with age)

Hope this helps. Good luck in your search.

I generally find in such cases you save immediate cash flow but you will pay down the road. This was my personal experience and it stuck in my head. This does not mean it is the case all the time. Take care and diligence in your decision. Good luck

It's not going to be appetizing in a couple years. It's a hard pass for me after what you said above when seeing the car.

Be patient. You'll find a better one.

I agree with all these guys, OP. Stay clear. Find one for a few grand more with no accident history. Pasta brings up a great point.. you're going to be super happy when you first get it, do some spirited driving here and there. 2-4 years down the road, you're going to always have this thought and feeling in the back of your head if you should have just got a clean Carfax car.

Though there will always be a market for an M4/M3, privately selling it will be a tougher sell and dealerships trade value tanks.

I see you're a brother Up North. Sorry about our last president...

Anyways, cars.com has a '17 M4 with 21K miles for $49.9K USD.

Pass for two reasons. One the collision history, and two, that it’s pretty sparsely optioned. I have regrets with not getting a comp pack and sun shades etc.

$46,000 isn't a good enough price imo with those claims. And if the hood has a gap / condensation in the headlights, I'd look for that everytime I'd step up to the vehicle.
Also, condensation in the headlights suck. It's pandora's box opening them, and I'd like to have mine painted inside, but I am wrestling with it since doing my 325 and somewhere it didnt get sealed right.

I'd shop around and be open to traveling. My car was 1300km's away, but it had everything on the checklist.

Thanks guys for the opinions, I think I'll pass on this car. However, the sale introduce me to another 2015 Silverstone with 53k km for the same price. This car also comes with 7k5 of collision claim on the front left. I know it is nowhere as severe as 18k collision. Would y'all say 7k5 is not major repair? I'm guessing headlight, bumper, paint and labour. Long story short, is the general consensus 7k5 collision is something livable and won't be much of a hassle when selling?

I initially saw a member selling his/her M4 for 39k with 2 major claims and 90k km. That's why I thought 46000 would be good price and the low km would make up for it. But like what everyone said, the cost and hassle down the road is not worth it.

Also check out Tommy L Garage, he had a company resealed his headlight, with new lens and painted inside. Looks great.

Unfortunately, we cant say this isn't a major repair, because we don't know the details of the what happened during the collision. He could've slid into a curb, pole, or other motorist, and I'd be looking for cracks in the control arms / and everything in that area- from brake integrity to if the rim is straight or has been replaced. $7 grand (and especially at a BMW collision center) doesn't go as far as we'd like.

Thanks for the shop tip.

OP, I called about that same vehicle, as soon as he said the value of the claim, I was like "ok thanks for your time, car's not for me". I know repairs for insignificant "damage" can add up. Had some paint repairs, and a fog light repair on my C63 total up over $6k. Zero body repair or damage beyond paint chips getting fixed. But almost 18 means there were some hard parts involved. Never know who/how it was repaired.
Ended up getting the SO M4 from Langley Porsche for same price, slightly more KM, but clean history. Gets delivered tomorrow!!

Hey G-Ram, I actually requested for icbc report for the parts replaced. Honestly they we're mostly cosmetic, paint and labour. Similar to you, I picked up a m4 in Edmonton for less km, no claim and same price. Congrats on your M4, if I remember correctly is that the Sakhir Orange M4?

Honestly, these cars now.... $18K while yes ALOT of money.... it does not take that much to get there...

My X5 had $14K worth of damage before i bought it from the original owner, turns out the bumper, headlight, and wheel and fender liner needed to be replaced and due to the 3M and painting etc it came out to that much.. it was incredibly minor.

So while it may be a large amount, if you do your due diligence and find out exactly what got damaged you might be in for a good deal.

My second choice was a guy located in Mississauga selling there's for $40k with 40k kms
