F80 Drivetrain Malfunction Error

Started the car this morning and was surprised to see this service message. The car was completely useless (loss of power) and had to get it towed to the dealer. Let's see what they find.

UPDATE:

Found some chewed wires and think it is vermin damage to the 2 main wire harnesses. I called my auto insurance and filed a claim which was processed and approved extremely fast (less than 24hrs). The worst part is that they have to special order from Germany and said it could take up to two weeks to receive the parts and another 2 days to install.

At least it gives me time to figure out this rat problem and get an exterminators out here. I haven't seen obvious signs of an issue but now I will be doing a full sweep this weekend.

I hope this is the issue and not something else.

Are you running a tune or stock? I've seen the same error message a few times when I was pushing the car hard for a full E85 back-end flash testing. The car would drive slower than usual, but everything goes back to normal after powering the engine off and on.

I ended up changing the spark plugs to NGK 97506 (gapped at .020") and the issue never came back.

I just have coding done from EAS and was looking at getting bootmod3 installed. Kinda up in the air until I get a report back but now I'm thinking of trading her in for an 18.

I got the chassis code once when a driver's side rear tire was low. Filled it back up, turned the car off and on, and it never came back. F80 if that helps.

My M4 had the exact same issue. Dealer determined it’s a faulty DME.

Good to know. I'm starting to get a little aggravated being that I dropped my car off at 7am today and have yet to hear back from the service advisor. Going on 3pm right now. Santa Monica bmw is a joke!

This is why, when I used to live in LA, I would go the extra distance to South Bay. Infinitely better than Santa Monica.

Hey at least they're replacing it for you and not making you pay $1500 to replace the Lithium-ion battery..look at the bright side.

Relax, there's no need to be heated. Your car came in as a "drop off" with no scheduled service appointment. 9 hours is nothing out of the ordinary, especially on a busy day and/or with limited tech resources. Just ask anyone who has ever worked in the service department, and they'll pretty much tell you the same story.

Like rr006rbc said, be glad you're getting a free battery replacement under warranty. Any progress is better than no progress at this point.

Actually had a 7am appointment scheduled and a loaner that wasn't available but I won't even get into that. Still under warranty (100k extendo warranty) so everything should be covered.

Let's see what tomorrow brings.

In that case, you have every right to be pissed! But how the heck were you able to schedule an appointment on the same day of the issue? Coincidence or did the issue occur on a different day?

Either way, you should ask to speak to the Service Manager to put your car on a higher priority.

Best of luck!

I'm just a touch confused. Was your appointment for something else? Because you said you got the error today and had the car towed.

Either way, for a serious issue, I don't think a 9 hour turnaround time is that bad.

Got the error code yesterday (not operational all day) booked an appointment yesterday for this morning, got it towed to the dealer. Sat on my hands all day to find out they are replacing a battery

Fair enough - I think the loaner part would piss me off the most if promised. I don't want them rushing my car and I appreciate they keep people in line, but if you are stuck at home with no ride... well then...
