Do I need to put on OEM tires to before turning in my leased car?

Hello guys,

I have Continental DWS06 tires with a good amount of tread left. In your experience, do I need to put on summer tires for lease return or id be okay with the AS tires? Thanks!

You never know what will happen when you turn in your car at lease end it is often up to the individual inspecting it. Technically speaking however you are supposed to return it with the same spec tires you received it with.

Ideally you have them on OE tires that have some tread on them.

If you can get a set of used PSS installed, that should make things smoother.

Technically, you could be charged per tire. For all my lease returns, tires have always been marked if below tread.

As others said, you are supposed to have the same type of tires on it as when the car was new. If you lease another BMW from the dealer where you are turning it in, perhaps they will let it go. You can get a pre-inspection and if they complain get some used summers.

Awesome thanks for the replies!
I will def get a pre inspection just to see what they say about the tires. The car is in pristine shape so that's my only concern plus I will be leasing another BMW.

In the past, inspectors were ok with me putting a different OE tire (e.g. Came with continental summer RFT, I gave back with Bridgestone Summer RFT) and you are definitely right on; sometimes sales people will excuse big mileage overages and dings/scuffs as part of the deal on a new car (I've always returned to a dealer where I'm getting a car or where I've bought in the past for this reason)

Check what it will cost to replace the tires with OE. I was charged the standard $400 a tire when I turned in my X5 and it would have cost $400 a tire from TireRack, non-installed. Also, you can do a pre-inspection so nothing is hidden on turn-in.
I thought I needed 4 and they only charged for two AND the front, which they didn't charge for, had cords showing on the outside BUT they hit the min tread depth in the middle - I immediately turned the car in after I received the pre-inspection report. I also did not buy another BMW.

Agree. To clarify, by "type" I mean summer vs. AS, non-RF vs. RF, etc. There should not be a problem if you originally got Bridgestone summers and return with Michelin summers (or vice versa).

Same spec ok, doesn’t have to be exactly the tire you bought it with. I agree about getting a pre-inspection to eliminate any surprises. If they won’t accept your current tires, go drifting! And then buy used tires of the correct spec.

I got dinged once for returning a car without RFT when the car came with RFT. But i’m an idiot
