6MT to DCT
Pre-cursor: Yes, I'm well aware it's ludicrous... But I'm a shop and have hand-rebuilt a ton of F80s and F82s and all.
Anyway, just thinking off the top of my head, these are the hardware pieces I'll need to swap: - 6MT > DCT - Add DCT Harness - Add Trans oil cooler + lines - Brake and Clutch pedal assly > Brake assly - Differential - Driveshaft - Flywheel - Manual Gear shifter > DCT Knob - Steering wheel/paddles - Remove Clutch pump and booster Anything else physically that I'm missing? Coding/software wise - not worried about the transmission ISN/VIN encoding - but will changing the FA be all I need to calculate all the proper software/coding changes? Anything else I'm missing from this proof of concept in my head? |

Sounds like you will be making a few car junk yard trips to make it economical.

I have a spare low mileage DCT trans on my shelf and the rest I've been able to source from some local wreckers I know. All in all, not bad at all on cost, I just have to make sure I'm not missing anything.

I have a tool that can virginize and match the ISN of the transmission. Works really well, actually. Used it when I replaced my last f80 transmission with a used one.

I’m confused why you would ruin a 6 speed car that are already hard to find by putting a dct into it? Just sell the 6 speed car to someone who will appreciate it and buy one of the piles of factory dct cars.

This is 1 of 1 Byzanz Metallic F80. Bought it from an insurance company and I have to rebuild the engine and will be dropping it anyway. I'm thinking of keeping the car for myself (possibly). Labor won't be much more intensive because I'll have the engine and trans on the ground anyway. I have a DCT sitting on my shelf as a spare, so it was a thought in my head and I wanted to see if it's as easy as I think it'd be (looks like it is).
I like driving stick, I don't think I'd like driving stick as my daily here in Chicago (I live in downtown, so it's a lot of city driving). So it's a thought. Can't sell this one and get another (well, I can - I've had 5 or 6 F80/F82 since 2015), but I can't get one in Byzanz Metallic... So, yeah. There ya have it |

I am also interested in changing the transmission from 6MT to DCT. In my case, the power and the days of track days make me think that it would be much better.
I think I can help with the process, having a workshop where I work daily with these cars. Possibly any help is good. In my case I have an M4 DCT blown up. So I think I have everything I need. I'm new here and can't reach you via PM, but I'd be happy to talk to you. Regards...! |

There are actually three of them (two standard F80 LCI's (one manual, one DCT), and one F80 CS (DCT).

Moose8106- Hey man, so can you virginize the tcu and change isn coding remotely? I have a customer with a f82 m4 that is getting a used trans (original one is junk not sure i want to risk original tcu) just wondering if that can be done remotely. appreciate any input.
