Don't blame us for being skeptical. Just lots of BS on web boards and this is bad news for several of us. Thanks for stepping up and posting what you know.

F80 2017 MY or wait for MY 2018 at this point

I was prepared to order a 2017 MY M3 early next year (March/April allocation hopefully), but with the news that the M3 is stopping production in 2/17, I'm now faced with either trying to find a last remaining allocation and paying a premium for it - or waiting until July (hopefully) allocation of 2018 MY M3. Have there been any credible rumors as to what the 2018 MY might drop/add? I am mainly concerned about the ZCP/ZEC and 6 MT options - hoping none of those get dropped (ZEC I don't think would regardless).

Note - i've heard that MY 2018 will start in March, not July - has anyone else been able to confirm this?

I'm trying to sort through this information.

One thing that seems all but certain here: BMW AG is not going to go and shut down production of multiple models for four months. So if there are any delays, it is for BMW NA only. The rest of the world should still be able to order and take delivery of the updated versions of the vehicles in question starting in March. Note that while in the US and Canada we call these "MY2018", most countries just refer to by them by the year and month of production.

I agree that a worldwide production hiatus seems illogical. Could it be confusion stemming from the fact that dealer documentation only shows the EOP for MY17 and we are just assuming that MY18 will have a similar July SOP as in previous years? I don't believe there has been any documentation showing a March SOP for MY18.

Wtf, I was going to order Tomorrow, but I wouldn't take delivery until Feb/March. Seems dumb not to wait for March now.

So frustrating

The original post said that there will be a 4 month production break. Sounds an awful lot like July will be the start of production on MY18.

It could theoretically be confusion along those lines. However, by now, dealerships should be accustomed to the March model year change-over for some models. It is a very regular occurrence, happening to at least one model in the lineup in any given year. It's true that this particular year sees a high number of models set to end production in February, but that itself should not be cause for such a misunderstanding.

Right now, my working theory is that, if the delays as described in the OP are true, it is due to the drastic drop in passenger car sales this year in the US (10%+). As such, BMW NA could be aiming to give the supply pipeline some time to clear before introducing the MY2018 models.

One could make a counter-point that other models - the 2 Series and 3 Series, for example - are also down, so why not stop those in February as well? My response to that would be, probably production volumes are arranged for a whole model year prior to the start of that model year so BMW NA is likely already committed to importing a certain number of those models through June/July when they are slated to end production for MY2017. In other words, looking at it from the other direction, BMW NA is taking advantage of the early MY2017 end for a number of models and saying, "Whoa, hold on here. We're getting killed with excess inventory - let's shut off the faucet now while we can, and wait to turn it back on later in the summer."

Seems bad logistics for BMW --- with this, practically all of their M cars are inaccessible.
M2 - year long wait list
M3/M4 - scarce, production stop
M5/M6 - EOP, new model isn't here yet
