Do you know if it works on S55? Cost less than Kies which is a very nice piece.
Maybe I'll add this as a precaution when I do my hub, I guess I'll find out lol.

This is the whole point. To get you paranoid and buy shit you don't need.

I mean it’s $100 isn’t it? Surely that doesn’t break the bank... I would say from my own experience it’s a thing, and I can see from the link posted from a reputable shop it has happened on the s55

Having said that, I don’t buy into fear mongering either. I’m going to just watch my belts and replace in good time. If I had seen this prior to installing my own cbc I would have bought it simple because of the aforementioned... it’s only $100

Hit up Chris@vargas, all these engines share common parts and design and based on the fact that Kies one fits all three, I would imagine the VTT one fits as well. That’s just speculation tho so take Chris’ word as the final say.

There are a whole lot of technical guys here, but I wanted to speak from a dealer technician standpoint - this isn't a common issue, and like someone else had mentioned, can be easily avoided by frequent visual inspections.

Since the S55 platform was released, I've been about 4 or 5 crank hub failures, and not a single issue with a sucked-in drive belt. Does that mean it doesn't happen? Absolutely not. I see this more so on the +150k N51/N52/N54/N55's that are just beat to shit and leaking everything.

This looks like a very high quality solution compared to the alternatives.

When did this even become a common issue for S55? Isn't this a N54/N55 issue only?

Most S55 engines are less than 90k miles. I've only got 47k on mine. If this is a issue, it would be later on in the lifespan of the belts. Or for those that don't change the belts

Although not a common issue with the S55 because high mileage isn't as common, I figured it couldn't hurt. Didn't get the Kies version since it's sold out but I purchased the Paradigm Engineering iteration of this (also milled from a single piece of 6061-T6). It's inexpensive and besides it not coming with washers (not necessarily needed) or Loctite 243 (since you'd be installing stainless bolts into a aluminum port) it's a nice unit. Very snug fit around the hub.

I had this happen to my x3 N55 as well but I ended up hearing the belt shredding in real time while at a drive through and I shut the car off just in time.

I pulled the shredded belt out in 1 piece and it was very wrapped around the outside of the hub, a couple more minutes and it was definitely getting in the engine. I drove the car 5 miles home on battery power 😂.

slaughter.mode I'm a newb and cant tell by your comment - are you saying if I buy this version I should go and get some locktite to use with it? Or are you just comparing to the Kies version?

Also, would love to hear if there is a single recorded instance of this guard actually catching a belt that broke loose or disintegrated. Anyone?

My guess is those that are thorough enough to be worried about this are also taking care of their accessory drive system with routine maintenance.

If you're mixing metals it's smart to use loctite. Factory bolts are microencapsulated so they're really one time use but they are also aluminum which is the same material as the thread. The bolts with my kit are stainless and not microencapsulated so loctite will just make sure they stay snug.

Buyer beware with the Keyes guard, I got one and it was a disaster. The tolerances on it were off.... seems some MBA of theirs just wanted to push trash out of inventory to keep the bottom line up. Had it installed at a very reputable shop and we had a number of issues with it.

1. Bolts included were too short to seat properly and the head of the bolts contacted the harmonic balancer.

2. The tolerances were incorrect on the plate itself so then it also made contact with the harmonic balancer and scratched to all hell.

Who ever the 3rd party mfgr they were getting these things from had a known bad batch and thank Keyes QA department that I got a bad one now im out $500 that I paid to have it installed and then removed. Buyer beware

Drw in Liverpool had a F80 recently that ingested a belt just like but luckily didn’t my damage the engine.

Dave did point out that oil had leaked on to the belts.

I was getting a chirping sound when starting from cold after I had a coolant pipe pop off an required a full coolant flush ans pressure test.

My fear was that coolant had leaked or slashed on to the belts.

The chirping it gone now and I struggle to see the belts from the top of the engine so I may buy and endoscope camera to connect to iPhone to check them.

Out of interest o I asked Bmw Ireland for a quote to change all.

$4k!!!
