Trunk Won't Open

Went to open the trunk to my 15 M4 and there's no click when I hit the trunk button, the fob doesn't open it, and the button on the dash doesn't do anything either. It went from works fine one day to not opening at all the next time I used it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Nope. It was unlocked in the glove box and I flipped it in both directions and nothing changed.

Can you lower the rear seats? Typically cars have an emergency pull in case a child gets trapped. Won't fix the problem but will get it open so you can look at the locking mechanism.

Nope. Seats are fixed and don't have any sort of passthrough.

You sure? Quick google search says they fold. I think the release lever is in the trunk.

The trunk won't open, so how does OP release the seats? Folding seats are standard on these cars.

Does anything happen when using the handle on the trunk itself?

Sounds like you may need a trunk latch.

I have a 2019 M4. There is a release latch behind the headrest inside the car. And a pull latch in the trunk in the trunk lid.

OP, have you gotten it open yet?

Nope. I haven't messed with it too much since the trunk is empty and I don't really use it much. I figured it was probably the trunk latch since there's not a click or anything when ii hit the release whether it's the fob or the trunk itself.

Trunk refuse to open on my 2017 BMW M3.

I have the same issue. Have you found a solution?
Trunk refuse to open on my 2017 BMW M3. My battery seems to be ok, the car starts up no problem. I have tried the valet switch in the glovebox, does not help. I can lock/unlock and activate the alarm with the keyfob. But, the trunk will not release with either of the buttons, the trunk, the key fob, or inside the car.
I really don't want to disassemble my rear seat and fish for the release cable.
P.S.
To make it more "fun", right before it happened, I bought some fruit from local grocery store, and placed them in the trunk. Drove one block to my house and this happens

Update: Ended up taking rear seat off to get to emergency release cable in the trunk.
The fusebox is inside the trunk, no way to get to, before you release it. All of which are ok.

I vaguely remember seeing options in BimmerCode to deactivate some trunk access related functions. Did you code recently and deactivate by accident?

Had the same issue on my ‘18 M2. Took the dealer a few days but they found a short in the locking mechanism.

Ironically, my ‘19 M4 has a trunk that refuses to stay shut.

Quick Update: Finally took my '17 M3 to the dealer, they found R.E.M. (Rear Electronic Module, Part# 61-35-9-499-001) has failed.
$1500 later my trunk is working again.

We’ll that’s a hefty cost! Glad you got it sorted out and thanks for posting the fix.

Ugh, same boat here. Also ‘17 M3. Just spent a few hours last night fighting my way into the trunk by removing rear driver’s side-bolster, unbolting bottom of seat back enough to wedge a hook into trunk to pull emergency release. Fortunately it’s bright white so easy to spot with limited visibility. Was extra hard for me though bc I have an air tank right behind fold down seats…

In my case the trunk opening was not working occasionally for last couple months, but figured low battery voltage was the culprit bc it always worked eventually. Now it’s just dead, going to see if I can read it with BimmerCode.

Ordered a REM from ‘16 F30, (same part #) on eBay for $40. Will see if that fixes the trunk when swapping. If so I’ll need to code it to have rear windows & camera work, and remove trunk dash light. If it doesn’t fix it I guess the latch could be the issue…but based on the amount of REM failures I’m seeing I’ll bet it’s that.

Interesting thread - didn't know this was as pervasive as it seems, definitely something I'm going to look out for! Alpine - would be curious how your REM replacement goes.
