Car Market Logic

apologies if I have missed a thread to add on.

I've had my 2015 DCT F80 M3 for 3 years now. i can't get rid of it. i lust after it. everytime i drive it, it's bliss for the most part. the only thing that frustrates me a bit is the DCT jerkiness for slow speed stop sign driving and how the car struggles for traction quite a bit with city speed driving. on top of that, winter is rough, you can't push the car much with low temp grip.

However..... i try to mitigate loss as much as i can. bought it for 45K 3 years ago, could easily sell it for 45K right now (i don't put much miles on it).

It is obviously a win to drive a car like that for 3 years and break even (besides standard maintenance, etc.)

so for the past year i've been trying to figure out what i should move to. a liveable daily driver that's dual character is the winning ticket for me personally right now, preferably with AWD.

tried F Type R, boring.

model 3 performance. beyond boring.

Bmw m550i, eh nice ride, not quite there.

F90 M5. it's it, only thing i'd literally go to.

so my long ass winded intro is leading up to a question i was hoping i could get some feedback on.

With the used car market on it's way to more normalcy in most likely the next 12-18 months, do you think the F90 M5 would plummet in Value compared to the F80?

I know that my car has gone up and value as well which is great, but my logic is that the F80 is the last non-goofy M3 and is already out of sight of the new models. so i'm thinking it should hold it's value well and most the depreciation is already taken. a lesser version of how the e92's went up when they introduced a turbo M3.

the BMW M5 is historically one of the highest depreciating cars on the market and i'm thinking that once the chip shortage, etc. is all caught up, they will tank from 80K for a 2018 to $55K pretty quickly....

I was honestly just curious if anyone sees it like this and would also wait to get one then, or in your opinion is my logic dumb as hell and to just snag the F90 M5 now?

The cost is not an issue, neither route would be a financial issue for me, i just try to mitigate Depreciation bombs the best that i can.

cheers,

I mean... the F90 is already depreciating.. albeit at a slower rate than normal.. there's only such a market for a $110-140k sedan nowadays.

No one can predict the market of used cars. I've been in the industry for 15 years and have never seen anything like the current market (on the flip side.. 2008-2009 for the opposite reason)

Unless you are buying a 1 of 50 Ferrari or Bugatti just go into it knowing just about all cars are a depreciating asset. You'll feel better. There's always a slight chance the special models (M3CS, M5CS, GTS etc) will slow down or even appreciate.. but never count on it.

Waiting is the right thing to do. I am in the same boat (looking to purchase), but will not pay the inflated price we see now. If you don't have to buy now, don't. Just my input.

if you still lust after it, keep it.

DCT jerkiness improves a lot running the DCT in mode 1 of 3.

Winter grip is alleviated by using winter tires. Massive difference. A tire like the Michelin PA4 feels fantastic in the typical cold winter asphalt.

Prices are inflated now, so now is a good time to sell if you have spare cars, but if you need to replace what you are buying it's a crapshoot

You’ve just written a long post about how you love your car and shouldn’t get rid of it. Personally i feel that there’s where you should have stopped.

It doesn’t matter if your car has a temporarily inflated value that you can cash out on if:
a) nothing out there is better for you
b) you sell high only to end up buying high on its replacement

this. of course I want to sell my 6pd M3...I don't even need a car. WFH for life it seems and I live in the city. Yet I would see no other alternate; and I always need my toy.

Don't leave the car you love to buy a car you might like. Stick with the F80.

With that being said, I do believe F90 M5 prices will come down. Especially the 2018 non-ZCP model. This particular M5 isn't a collectors item and nothing justifies it holding or rising in prices after this moment in time. It'll depreciate like every other car.

Waiting to see how the F90 ages is a good thing regardless as many gremlins and more serious flaws don't really raise their heads in the first 5 years.

Will you replace it?

The F8x checks all the boxes. I'll drive mine until the wheels fall off. And then I'll buy another.

Maybe not the most useful answer but it sounds to me like we at least agree it's the perfect car under $100k. All car prices are inflated right now, trying to dodge a couple thousand $ in depreciation and ending up with a car you like less at a similarly inflated price just doesn't make sense to me. Especially if you're not worried about the financial issue with going with a F90 lol

There is nothing to replace it. Don’t make the mistake I did, just keep the car.
