It is the fact that, most 718, especially the higher trimmed ones go to owners who know their cars and will absolutely complain about the Flat 4. Despite history will tell you Porsche has used Flat 4 engines way back when, they believe the Flat 6 is how it is supposed to be. Porsche agreed and at the very least threw one back to the GTS for the 4.0 while keeping the 4 in the base and S.

I don't mind the Flat 4 but I would not have gotten the GT4 if it had a Turbo 4 in it.

For the dude I blocked. The car isn't bad, it just isn't wanted. Porsche owners online tend to talk down the Flat 4 for just as much stupid reasons as most of us here are talking about the Beverface/Bunny teeth G8x. Price wise, they will not change much because they aren't really desired. Even after COVID, they won't change. I am 90% certain on this. That is the plus and minus of the car. You can get it at a very good price, and more than enough for everyone but at the cost of some owners giving you crap for having a Flat 4.
Best deal I've found in a day or two of looking: VW of Palm Springs has a 2017 718 Cayman S 6MT with 28K miles for sale for $62K. It looks to be in good condition and has popular options such as PASM, Premium Package, 14-way Sport Seats. One owner, no accidents, clean Carfax. At that price point I could add a third radiator for far less than the cost of a used GTS (best prices on GTS seem to be about $20K higher) and a $1K APR tune will add a lot of power. https://www.vwofpalmsprings.com/inve...ab2a87hs285875

I might do it. Same price as 987 S and far cheaper than 718 GTS or GTS 4.0. (I can get into one of those later.) And I'm getting frustrated waiting for a G80 allocation (now 75 days and counting).

What do you all think?

You'll end up with a much better looking car.

Jokes aside if you've ever spent a lot of seat time in a Porsche vs a BMW its not really even an argument. My buddy has a 997 C2S I have tracked a few times and even tho its "slow" by todays standards its just an amazing driving experience.

Honestly 987 has plenty of power and is the perfect size for NorCal twisties - smiles per gallon will be very high. And that’s not a bad deal in today’s market

That’s a 718 Cayman S with the 2.5L turbo-4.

Oh whoops, my bad! Still drinking my morning coffee! The 4 cyl 718 is still a great car just no flat 6 turns off a lot of purists

Yeah… I can pay for cultism later. $80K would be too rich for my blood for a fun car at the moment but I could justify $60K. If they were the same price point or within $5K I would definitely go for a GTS or GTS 4.0. But the GTS 2.5 is $80K and the GTS 4.0 is $90K-$100K.

I’ve been watching some reviews and it seems like there are a lot of benefits to the turbo-4 if you can get past “what it’s supposed to sound like.”

For me its not so much the big grille design as I like that on most cars. Heck I have even owned a couple big grille Lexus. Its the split big grill that just doesn't look right and the slats being the wrong direction. Ill never get over the fact that it feels lazy and like the designer just took the old grilles, turned them 90 degrees, and stretched them out in photoshop.

On a side note for you and mahalom3 .. I actually really dig the Explorer ST and I think it would be a fantastic daily driver. My father has a Lincoln Aviator with the same EcoBoost and he loves it. Do you guys get that engine? I always wondered how reliable they were.
I wish we had the ECO boost Explorers. I would be hot rodding. Lol!

Just remember with Porsche- you might pay much more upfront for desirable model but you will be better off in the long run as it will retain value that much better. The 4cyl cars are not desirable hence the much lower pricing.

Having driven the 981 Cayman S with the NA 6cyl - the sound inside with PSE is incredible. The 718 is great car overall though, looks to be great spec on the one u found.

Good advice... it looks like I can get a 2017 718 S (2.5 turbo-4) for $62K or a 2016 981 S (3.4 flat-6) for $67K or a 2016 981 GTS (3.4 flat-6) for $77K.

I watched EverydayDriver's comparison of Cayman generations and they rated the 1st gen Cayman R over the 3rd gen 718 GTS 2.5 over the 2nd gen 981 GTS. They said you can compromise on the sound, you get a more nimble car in the 718 with better steering and brakes. Sounds like a 718 GTS 4.0 is the best of all worlds but $90K-$100K is out of my comfort zone.

It's not just sound on why people prefer the N/A 4.0. The turbo 4 is great and plenty quick. For me it was just missing something so I never pulled the trigger on one until GTS 4.0 came around. The throttle response/no lag, overall faster and yes sound. The turbo 4s are great though around town as the power is more accessible down low/mid range. All depends on what you prefer power delivery wise.

Porsche did some engine voodoo with the GT3 because even with the god forsaken filters it sounds pretty good.

The car looks to be a decent daily.

I talked my uncle, or tried to talk him, out of a RR Defender.
