Default to top-down cameras on reverse

I just took delivery of my 2018 M3 to replace my 2015.
My biggest gripe by far is that now when going into reverse, the camera ALWAYS goes to the rear view camera. In my 2015, it would goto rear view, but you could change it to top down, and then that setting would persist, so the next time you went in reverse, it would pull up the camera you had last selected. Now on the 2018, it will ALWAYS goto rear view, and its 3 clicks to get it back to top view, and if you're parallel parking and going into reverse over and over, it will still force the camera back to rear view. After getting used to the top-down cameras, this is infuriating! Has anyone else had this gripe or am I alone?

Anyways, does anyone know of any settings I could play with to get the much preferred 2015 behavior back? If no one has tried this, I will probably go in and start mucking with camera related settings in the HU_NBT, but since I don't know German, this will be just a brute force attempt.

It is software coded. There is no FDL changes, of which I am aware, that can accomplish desired feature.

Thanks Almaretto!
Huge bummer, but I'm still going to try mucking around because it is unbearable!

Good luck! I know you will make many happy if you locate setting. My F010 remembers preference and my F015 used to, before software was updated. I just wish the ID5/ID6 toggle was more user friendly.

I dug around and if its coding it will be a combo of a code in HU_NBT2 and one in REM. Just don't have ability to compare differences in different versions of CAFD files. Seems the '18's built in the summer remember the setting, and after September 2017 the software changed which makes me think its doable...but if Almaretto says no, then its no...

TM's NCD / CAFD Tool will compare.

I think it is is a software issue like changing turn signal blink number, but I have not investigated thoroughly.

I would guess that this change is the result of the new requirement that cars sold in the US must have a rear view camera. The definition of a rear view camera is that the display shows the rear view of the car when reverse is engaged.
I would assume that BMW made the change so they are in compliance.

That said, if this change is specific to the US only, it could be a US specific code in the system.

Yes please someone find this, i also hate this really bad.

I have also noticed that my '18 doesn't keep the "cursor" on the late selected radio station. For example i can select a station with the steering wheel and HUD but it doesn't always move the arrow cursor on the screen. my 2015 F30 did this and my 2015 M4 it was fixed and now its back to being broken, misses like this piss me off!

Do you have that NCD / CAFD tool or is it something TM typically shares? I can get the October '18 CAFD files and the July '18 files from audioMETH and either send to you or just do it myself. I just don't have the tool (but do have some time), and TM I think needs a break from people asking him for stuff!

Got it thanks, those CAFD files included with the tool the version that lets one choose "top down" vs "backup cam" in reverse? Won't be able to get the CAFD from my car until tomorrow.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but isn't this just available via stock iDrive? Once you're in reverse, you can toggle the iDrive knob to the left, and check off/on the top option.

Once that's done, it will stay that way for the next time you put it into reverse. No coding necessary. I have a '17 F80 and this is the case.

*EDIT - sorry, saw that you mentioned in your previous 2015 it would stay with your preference, but I'm assuming with the 2018's it reverts to just rear-view only.

Not sure to which files you are referring, but there is no option as you describe. Tool just highlights differences.

Turns out audioMeth and my car both do not remember the setting for "Top Down in Reverse" so using the compare tool between his car and mine won't help. Does anyone have an F80 or F82 that remembers this setting? If so would like a copy of your CAFD files for REM module and HU_NBT then can compare for differences between the 2 files.

I for one don't particularly need this setting, but was willing to dig around in my car to see if I could get it to remember the setting for top down view in reverse. Now I feel like I'm committed to the project!

Thanks rhk118. Bummer they're functionally the same. I know the software was different in my 2018 than my 2015 (different gong sound, tiled homescreen/different ui/menus) so now I'm worrying Almaretto was right and this is just part of the software upgrade and not a changeable setting, but I appreciate the help!

Now we just need to determine if anyone with the new "tiled" homescreen interface ("NBT EVO ID6 UI"?) has the camera memory working, and if so, grab their config data. Where would be a good spot to post that question to 2017(?) and 2018 owners?

Tiles are ID5 and ID6. 2017 has ID5, but you can easily toggle through coding.

Oh gotcha. Well then maybe there is still hope! I will start bugging random F8X owners I see and ask them if they would be willing to help
