I wanted to stop on a hill facing uphill and exit the car for a moment with the engine still running. So, I put the transmission into neutral and pulled the handbrake. To my surprise, the car rolled backwards.
How do I do this without the car rolling downhill? |

Pull the handbrake more/tighter. If it’s as tight as it’ll go, then it needs to be adjusted so it will hold the vehicle.

How far did it roll? It really shouldn't do anything more than rock. As stated above you might to adjust it.

My hand brake has some play as well and I’ve got only 6,000 miles on the odometer. Maybe just the way it is, but do have service tighten it up some if they can.

I usually just leave it in D and turn the engine off. But on that particular occasion , my girlfriend was waiting for me in the car that's why I left the engine on. I was so surprised when it rolled down like kept rolling down , I had to run and chase the car , it was hilarious LOL. How do I adjust the hand brake tho?

Either there is something wrong with your parking brake or you need to put more muscle into it.

If you don't pull it high enough, the car will roll. This happens in all cars... if it still rolls that means something is wrong with your Parking Brake/Ebrake whatever you wanna call it.

The parking brake is a manual mechanical device so some man handling is called for.

In his defense, OP is in the UK. This means he'd have had to use his left hand to pull the brake handle. Since only ~10% of the world's population is left-handed, then it's likely he was right-handed. So because it wasn't his dominant hand, and therefore not as strong, it's forgivable that he didn't pull the lever up hard enough.
