Yeah I must really like them. Because now that I think about it, almost all my favorites cars have alcantara interiors. Including one of my favorite BMW's, E46 M3 CSL.

For me, it was not the Alcantara. I had that in my 2004 330i ZHP and loved it. What I didn't like on the Ferrari was the design and overall layered look. Did not like that at all.

I look at interiors in a different way than most people here. I actually care very little of what things look like, it's more what do I have to do to hide all the damage I've done.

The worst thing in a car are air vented seats, second is a working garage light. Third place goes to soft leather and anything black. Any car company wanting to test a new car should lend the proto (only those with over 350hp, rwd, manual, milk capabilities and a button I can find for the traction control) to me. In a week every soft spot and design flaw will be revealed.

Alcantara is 1/3 the weight of leather, for example this is why the 458 Speciale has a full alcantara interior vs the regular Italia leather interior. Yes alcantara is man made, but for a reason. It is much more durable, if I remember correctly it has wear rate more than twice of real suede. Real alcantara is not exactly inexpensive, 3-4x more per/yd than the inferior ultrasuede. Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini could even use real suede leather, but it just wouldn't hold up. They choose alcantara due to it's anti-slip, flame proof, lightweight and durable properties. Now referring to people wanting an alcantara headliner like the M5. I would think most people know alcantara is man made in Italy and not real suede leather product. Fact is the material looks much better that what is currently used for the M3/M4 headliner, but would cost BMW quite a bit more money to do.
Yeah, what kicked all this off was a photo of a 599 my buddy's brother has for sale with alotta Alacantra on the interior

I also was not a fan of the look and, sorry BlackJet, even less of a fan of the one you posted.

Have never doubted it's practical benefits, just the supposedly 'luxury'/'exclusive' pricing image it has as a synthetic fiber.

As for its cost, the fact it costs 3-4x ultra suede would be pure marketing as, from what the little researching I've done says, it is a nearly identical manufacturing process.

As I ready myself for the series finale of Mad Men.....I increasingly think the association we have between 'luxury' and Alacantra is just one helluva sales pitch and nothing more.

(That is, unless someone has a reason to justify the luxury tag on it - not the practical benefit, the luxury benefit)

Hard plastic and vinyl are the only 2 'lups approved' interior materials. Noted.

(Sounds like you spent too much time in the backs of police cars in your wayward youth lups........)
