As a couple of others have alluded to, I would keep my current life and invest that $3.5M. If it's an inheritance, I'm assuming someone worked hard to be able to pass that money along. I'd try to make it something bigger for the next generation. Try to turn it into $10M+.
For some reason, if it were lottery winnings, completely different story. Maybe half on a car and half investing!

I had no idea the board had so many go-zillionaires on here.
3.5 M is a TON of money...I doubt I will ever have that much in the bank. I agree that spending a majority of that amount on a car would be borderline insane but hey, what else is a windfall for?

pretty sure OP said inheritance....if you are 50 and get a $3.5mm inheritance and that's all you had and you spend $700K on a car, then yes that's moronic. If you have already amassed a nice $2-3MM retirement, are debt free and then get a windfall for another $3.5mm, then hell....I would.

I don't think the OP is asking for financial advice - more just "what would you do if you had an EXTRA $3.5 to spend on a car?"

I would buy a 981 Boxster S with MT and keep the M4 as the daily.

I literally just posted in another thread about how baffled I am with how much people spend on their cars relative to their financial situation.
3.5 mil is NOT enough money to buy an exotic car. I cannot believe some of these responses. I wouldn't even think about ferraris and mclarens before I hit networth of 15 mil at least (excluding my house) and hope it can generate me what... hopefully 600k in annual passive returns? |

If I had 3.5mil free money, I’d happily turn that into 3mil free money and waste the rest on a dream car - 911GT3 RS 4.0 if I could get one. I didn’t spend my entire childhood dreaming I could be the richest man in the cemetery. |

And no, my life hasn’t sucked because I believe 3.5M to be a lot of money or life changing, because it would be for me (and 99% of the general population AND population on this board, regardless of what people are saying).

BTW - I live in Maryland and have a place in SW Florida so I'm quite familiar with elitists. 95% of the population will never have $3.5MM in the Bank. $3.5M in the Bank and just a 6% return will get you over $200K per year and NEVER touch the principal. To put that $200K in perspective, that is the equivalent of what just 7% of households in the entire country make in A YEAR. You can cherry pick your Palo Alto, DC, NY homes all you want. DO you really think ANYONE that came into a $3.5M windfall would blow that $$$$ on a house just to impress their friends? Who in their right mind thinks you need to have a house with a $15-20K monthly mortgage to "get you into something nice"? You are delusional. Last edited by REDEV217342; 02-24-2018 at 08:45 AM.. |
