F80 M3 vs F90 M5

I know these are different animals... but wondering if anybody has had any seat time or made the jump to the F90 M5? Thoughts, impressions?

I had a few passenger time with a friend of me. The car is way more comfy than my F80s. It feels more refined too (luxury). You definitly feel the extra weight (car had more body roll than my ZCP). It pushes really hard and you feel that the V8 is in an another league in terms of torque and power. It is a great machine but it is not for every M2/3/4 driver I think. In a very "reductive" conclusion: If you often travel (long time sitting in the car) it is the car for you. If you often drive very sporty (mountain roads, canyons...) F8x are better. Hope it helps...

I agree with all points above - it's large, comfortable and powerful. But its weight is very apparent. It's a monster but it's a boat.

I can add the following comments that my friend told me:

Cons
- 8AT is not so impressive vs DCT (feels not as connected and slower)
- exhaust sound is muted even with the sport exhaust compared to F10 M5 (maybe it is specific to EU regulation)

Pros
- Even in RWD the car has a lot of grip. Amazing!
- steel brake are impressive

Much appreciated, definitely good info. 8AT compared to DCT is good feedback as losing the third pedal would unfortunately be the main driver of me moving on from my 6MT M3 with my knees not cooperating anymore. Your point of why the M5 might possibly not be for every M2/M3/M4 driver is definitely worth some thought as well. Thanks!

No 6 speed, so no interest. I know same argument every time, but is what it is.

If the new M5 with DCT, it will be the A++ sport luxury sedan. With zf, only a score A sport sedan.

It's all because BMW wants to make an AUTO like a DCT/manual. It doesn't work. I learn it from my X5M. It's a good transmission don't give me wrong

but.........why they try to put it to N when you completely stop..... also ZF is much worse than DCT when you slow down and shift from 3rd gear to 2nd gear.....

Just make it as an regular auto when its on the D mode and S mode can be whatever you want it to be! Just like fake sound from speaker!!! Whyyyy?

Agree. If M3 didn't exist in stick, I'd probably find myself in a cool SUV instead of an automatic sedan.

Pretty jacked up right knee and the left isn’t much better. Unfortunately can’t comfortably heel toe anymore. Been trying to hang on (my F80 is 6MT) but the discomfort is starting to outweigh the enjoyment.

The M5 will be much more comfortable, luxurious, quiet, and faster. The M3 is much more nimble, stiff, and nosier.

If i had to sum it up i would say its a more grown up car. Its also much faster in real world due to awd and less fussy. Another thing i would add with the m5 and rs7s i have driven lately.. You can and do end up approaching corners / objects much quicker due to the confidence from awd and the acceleration is insane so its actually very easy to misjudge these situations and end up in a crash... not really going to be a problem for most of us here.

Another car for you guys out there i recommend to try out is the glc63s .. its a beast of a suv but bygod the ride is terrible on 21s or whatever the f** it is.

Had an F10 M5. Currently have the M4 because I needed a manual sports car in addition to my SUV. The new generation M5 is incredibly dull looking. It's "a car" in the most depressing sense. It's lost it's character and soul - in my opinion - and I can't tell it apart from every other car BMW makes that they slap 14 ///M badges on (whether they are ///M cars or not) and compared to the other big, powerful sporty-sedans in the market, it would be my LAST choice now.

But, I'm sure someone smarter than me deciding being exactly like the competition, but a lot less interesting, was a good idea.

It is funny that you mention that, I was looking at the GLC63S as a second “car”.

M5's have always looked dull. Even the vaunted E39 my girlfriend saw a few years ago, saw me drooling near it and said "what's the big deal with that car".

I have both M2 and M4. Tested the new M5 in BMW event. Its better than F90 in all aspects. Engine response and turbo lag is lower, handling is better (understeer less in corners), it feels lighter, grip is better in all modes, i like the transmission but you have to play with the gears more. Its more comfortable than F90 and ofcourse than M2/M4. Design is not bad to me. A little bit silent inside of the cabin but acceptable.

FYI, F10 is “old one” while F90 is the “new one”

This.

You guys are trying to compare the F90 styling to the aggressiveness of the F80.

An M3 is much more aggressive than a 3xx. And ironically enough, it never looked 'that' different until the f8x generation.

an M5 is a refined highway bomber and looks somewhat similar to a 5xx

always has.

And to further my point, in Jeremy Clarkson's review of the F10 M5, he says:

"like previous versions of the M5, you wouldnt know its anything out of the ordinary unless youre an industrial strength class one ocean going car bore"

It's been consistent with previous years. I for one, love the F90. I think its aggressive in all the right places

BMW lost the plot with the M5 after the E39, whereas with the F8X, it's the best yet.

I'd rather have this bad boy minus the nerd in the seat.

Well, to be fair, that has always been the M5's mantra, and what most of the customers for this car want - the ultimate Q-ship/"wolf-in-sheeps-clothing." The M3 was always the one with spoilers, power domes, flared fenders, etc.
