It seems that when it comes to Turbo engines (V8s, V12s) Mercedes AMGs have a more visceral sound to them, and they probably will nail it with the 4.0 TT and with the upcoming inline 6 engines. As was stated earlier, it seems when it comes to turbo inline 6s, the Japanese seem to have been able to nail a sound that to many sounded very good. |

So you are saying the japanese gtr sounds better than the M3 - did I understand that right? |

My GTR sounds a little better than the video posted here when it was stock. Then I upgraded the exhaust and it's night and day. All the moaning here about the sound is crazy because you have a sedan that does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and filled with new gadgets and beautiful leather and interior but then again it's in people's nature to put down something that is 1- different 2- New 3- faster or better than what they have per what we have seen so far. Once the reviews come out and I am sure it will be mainly positive, you will still have the same arguments until most of the people complaining end up buying one and then it's all love all over again.

The E92 V8 sounds very much like a cross plane crank V8 IMHO. Yes it has a higher redline, so at redline it naturally sounds more agressive than a V8 that redlines at 7000rpm or so. But it still has that unmistakeable cross plane crank warble at idle and slightly offbeat exhaust pulsing that ALL cross plane crank V8's have to have, by design. And just as a comparison on how different a flat plane crank V8 sounds (but in fact more similar to the S55 in the OP): The cross plane V8 is perhaps more sonorous and "musical" than the flat plane crank V8, which has a more hard edge and metallic rasp. Just like how it seems the S55 has in the OP, especially when compared to the N55 exhausts. Maybe it's an acquired taste to like it, or perhaps it will sound mean in real life and people will actually like it. To me, it seems like they have gone for a hard, metallic, racy and edgy sound. Not a "soft" sonorous, musical one. Last edited by Boss330; 01-30-2014 at 10:41 AM.. |

I suggest we all do that (listen to the idle of the 458 and M4 with eyes closed and headphones). I just did myself, and they are strangely similar at idle... Perhaps if the sounds in the OP was just released without images and we had been told it was a Ferrari... Wonder how the comments would have been then.. It sounds like a mid 90s 4 cylinder sport motorcycle with a Muzzy exhaust

First vid sucked, but the second vid is fine. Not great, but sounds fine for what it is. I think there's enough there in the vid to indicate in real-life it will be a bit better. Goes without saying the car will always be on SportPlus exhaust mode.

To paraphrase, you can like the way a Chevy van sounds with it's cross plane V8 (it's just an opinion after all). And to me, the S65 stock exhaust sounds to tame and to similar to a Chevy V8 and it wasn't anywhere near as good as the car it replaced (E46 M3). E46 M3 is pure music and shames the S65 sound in every way. But others (like the Chevy van brigade) can disagree |

As I said, many agree that the E9x sounds good, but not everyone... It doesn't stand out when listening to it at a track.
The induction and engine noise on the other hand... The Chevy van was a tongue in cheek comment directed towards the "Nails on a chalkboard" comment. Such comments are really ignorant, as if any other sound than the one he likes must be as bad as "Nails on chalkboard"... I did the Chevy van comment just to show how stupid such a comment really is... The fact is that people prefer different sounds, and there are no universal definition of what is a good exhaust sound (as he implied). It's just like music, people prefer so many different kinds of music. Doesn't mean that those who prefer something else than me, must also like the sound of "Nails on chalkboard" as well... |

From other videos I have seen the sound inside the cabin sounds really good with the windows down.. So the question is why care so much what someone outside the car thinks? If you care about everyone's opinion then you lead a life that is not yours. If your trying to impress people as you drive by them with the sound of your exhaust then kudos to you because you must be 21 and doing very well to own a car like M3. Does the car sound amazing? Nope, it's a 6 turbo car. Could it be better, absolutely. Does it change my mind cause it doesn't wake up the neighbors when I start the car? No!

But of course again, as much as I agree there is some similarity (with the likely acknowledgment that the M4 was on cold start), ALL of that disappears under no load high rev and certainly under load.
