How long from individual request to approval?
When submitting a request for an individual color through BMW, how long does it take typically to know its been accepted and approved?

short answer is that it depends on the color. for more common colors, might only be a couple days. for a new color that requires development, it could take months.

I put in a request for Porsche sapphire blue metallic, which if they can do for the usual 5k then I'm good. Otherwise Monte Carlo blue is my backup.

In my situation, the CA submitted a request to BMW NA for multiple colors. They confirmed that the colors requested were both possible and what build weeks they could even begin producing a car in each color (not saying this is when my car would be produced, just when any car could be done in that color). When my order was submitted, it appeared to go from a normal order submission status into status 102 when they submitted the color request to Germany. It went into status 112 when they approved the color with the car's expected build week. That is when I say the color was officially approved in full for my order. It took from August 04 to August 22 for the order to hit that status. You could say the color is technically approved before then, but I don't consider it approved for the order until it is associated to the specific build. Yeah I'm not holding my breath for the color, I don't know of any BMW ever being done in that color and I already choked on the original 5k price, but I definitely will not go above that. I've been a fan of Monte Carlo blue and estoril Blue since the days of the original M coupe and E36 M3. Have always wanted it and never had a chance to get it.

i'll share my experience. i talked with my dealership about building a 2nd m4 for me in laguna seca blue with full black leather but also adding laguna seca blue contrast stitching. no one had done the laguna seca blue stitching before (or so i was told). it took about ten days from the day we designed the request to the day i was approved. bloody expensive design for sure, but i thought my dealer did a great job of getting the answers back from bmw that we needed to make the decisions. pretty impressive.

Really depends on how complex the request is. If it's something like contrast stitching that hasn't been done before, or a non-standard combo, then it might be a while. Mine was approved in a little over a week, but it took considerably longer (over a month) to get confirmed production with approval from Germany.

Well as expected, my Porsche color request has been denied. So now to get approved for Monte Carlo blue, that should be pretty straight forward no? First time doing individual and I'm not sure my local dealer is too familiar with it.

Why does everyone feel the need to choose colors from high-end or exotic marques? I mean, it's a 'color' assuming there's not a special, expensive paint process, luxury car colors are no different from any other color.
Someday I want to see someone get Individual Mazda Soul Red Metallic or something. |

Couldn't care less what it was from, was a shade of blue that I absolutely loved when I saw in person. But I feel 99% the same about MCB. Just figured if I'm paying 5k it should be a little more unique but I don't care too much about that.

It's been one month today since I received my Production number. Still waiting one approvals for Individual paint (LSB) and additional interior leather (console, back of seats). I've seen photos of cars with the leather additions I've requested so I fully expect approval.
Love to get things moving but understand some things just take time. Posting this so people interested in similar additions are aware of delays. |

You ask your SA, they ask BMW NA, they ask BMW Individual. It really depends on what your asking for and how accessible/busy each person in the chain is.
I started by working with BMW Individual directly during a visit to Munich to see what was possible before I even got an SA involved so I was effectively pre-approved. If all your looking for is an established BMW paint, then it should only take a couple of days as long as everybody in the approval chain is reading/processing their email in a timely manner (which is usually the case). The weak link is typically the SA as many of them don't have a clue about the process... If you're trying to do a one-off paint, then they will need to do some experimentation to confirm it can be accomplished (which you will have to pay for). This obviously has a much greater impact on the time required.

Almost 2 weeks, but I'm also doing individual interior. If it is longer than 3 weeks, the the dealer doesn't have an allocation or they're not following up.

I had a production number before I submitted my Individual requests so I had an allotment locked in. Still took five weeks, but I had fairly significant interior additions (leather covered and stitched console, leather seat backs) which might take longer.

Individual paint looks to be a week or two if the paint color has been done before. Individual interior requests that can be done on the normal production line, like a full rather than extended Individual leather, I would guess two to three weeks. Anything that involves additional work not on the assembly line, such as my hand stitched leather console and seat backs, took me five weeks. I also had a price quote for leather stitched door handle pulls but decided to do these in wood. |
