It wasn’t all that long ago that many were saying the exact same thing about BMW offering DCT alongside 6MT.

pretty much this. The auto is cheaper to produce. and 99% of BMW customers won't notice the difference. They all leave DSC on and drive the speed limit. So an automatic is better for them. BMW will push more cheapo leases out of the next M3/M4 and make money / sell more cars.

people will get used to it. we'll have this same discussion again when BMW ditches the manual for good, and then ditches tranmissions all together for an EV setup in the 2030 M3 or something.

Yeah. I remember that a lot of the journalists at first were underwhelmed with the M4 too. Said it was too big and lacked steering feel and blah blah. If they didn't like this beast, they definitely won't be too fond of the next gen with a slushbox...

1. msrp matters only in the sense that a higher msrp means more options. Options matter even in the used car market.
2. Only people on this forum care about manual tranny, public wants dct 3. Convertibles M4s are popular in South Florida, not so much up north. 4. I have been offered 39.1k from Acura dealer on trade but the car they had wasn't to my liking (looked good in pics). 5. Sales tax is a major factor in trading versus private. $40k private sale is the same as getting $37,600 in trade. 6. Why did I want to buy the 2017? Comp pack and 17 months warranty plus better color combo would have been worth it to me for 10k (meaning 38k on my trade). I walked out and they did not even try the wait a minute let's see what we can do routine.

Please expand on what problems the MY 2016+ seem to have that the MY 2015 doesn't have. Cite your sources if possible. Except for the spun crank hub, which seems to occur mostly on modded engines and isn't very common, I'm not aware of any significant problems. There doesn't seem to be anything on the scale of say, the HPFI on the E9x models, or the rod bearings on the S54 engine.

this generation will likely be taken to the cleaners. ones hope is you have a rare combo, such as f80 full leather stick , but finding the right buyer will be a pain in the ass. Trading the car. What! no one drives stick, heres 3 dollars

versus if you sell for 42k private party and go get a new car; your still down the 800 in tax savings. while the other party pays tax as well. and people want to be taxed more |

here in missouri it doesn't matter if you trade in to a dealership or sell private party. You have 6 months of that tax credit regardless.
sell car for 50k private party, 6 months later buy another car for 70k... you only have to pay tax on the 20k difference.

Totally agree, but for me there has been an indirect investment (mental mostly). As a health insurance broker I drive approx 50,000 miles per year due to many of my clients being across the state. If they need me, I am more than happy to drive the 400+ miles to meet with their employees. And I'm happy non fatigued when I arrive, which typically means more $$ due to customers knowing they have a broker that isn't inconvenienced. I'm not sure I could say the same if I had to make the same trek in in a Toyota Corolla.

"Can you explain number 5 further? How is that so? I'm selling mine privately but if that's true, I might just go for the highest offer I got on a trade at my local dealership."
State by state difference, here in Florida you get a trade credit on sales tax equal to trade value.

Why don't I ever see articles dogging the MB slushbox? Doesn't the C63 have a regular auto?

I spoke with a salesperson at carmax who said he has a list of buyers to contact when any manual M3 or M4 comes in and they sell really quickly. I sold my manual transmission 335is and 535i to carmax and got really great prices on both. |

While the S55 is a magnificent piece of engineering, driving it with a 6MT introduces the same "rubberband" feel that's associated with a lot of turbo cars, although to a much lesser degree. The DCT equipped car hides that trait pretty much completely and it feels naturally aspirated, I don't know if it's the DCT gearing or the instant shifts but it feels way more responsive and aggressive. Sure there will always be the die-hard manual shopper who wants to buy a car strictly for the "fun" factor, not necessarily seeking max performance. From what I've seen, the vast majority of shoppers looking at the F8x are a different type, they know the performance these cars are capable of and that's what they want first and foremost. Every customer I have dealt with inquiring about the F8x wanted a DCT btw... Source: I'm a Senior Consultant for CarMax. |
