Oil Catch Cans
Hi All,
I caught a great Savagegeese video on oil blow back and preventative measures from a couple of years ago this morning. After some further research, (there are some informative discussions on the forum and some good articles on the OEM and technical sites), I am wondering what the general consensus is? Absolutely necessary Mod for a daily driver, or have the issues been rectified from 2017 on as some are suggesting? I am still covered by a warranty. Does installing one affect this? I am leaning towards necessary, but your thoughts and/or comments would be appreciated. Thanx in advance. Echo |

I think Mishimoto has just made one that fits perfectly in the engine bay for S55 - I'm personally on the fence on this one to be honest. I personally think it's probably a good idea if you are really worried about it, however the effects of the issues arising from not having one will probably be too long that i could probably be in a new car by the time it happens. I also personally don't think it'll affect your warranty if you do install one, as theoretically it is just making your system more efficient with wastage and it is not really affecting anything "technical" to the engine, essentially just catching the bypass oils...

An oil catch can separates oil from the crankcase vapour that's ingested back into the intake manifold, or it's a standalone crankcase breather system that's vented to atmosphere as required on race cars.
The necessity of it depends on the whether or not the OEM breather system emits oil into the vapour stream and cause the engine to detonate on oil ingested that typically occurs at persistently high revs and G forces. Driving on race tracks emphasises an engine's potential to ingest oil from the breather system. I don't believe the S55 engine is overly prone to ingesting oil and the OEM breather system works quite efficiently in most cases. |
