Been following this release for a while. This is truly the ultimate 911, IMO. A GT3, lightened, with a 6MT and no rear wing. If they made more of these and they were closer to GT3 money, I'd put my order down tomorrow. I think this will ultimately be the most desirable 911 of the past 20 years.

I know this will sound stupid, but I wish they offered more than 2 colors. I also think for the money, the 991.2 GT3 will be better value.

But I'm guessing the buyers of the R aren't thinking about value like me

I don't think it is a problem as, most likely, it is marketed to people who will not care much about $185k.

If you gotta ask, you can't afford it

I'm sure half the 918 owners have already called dibs on one of these

Somehow... no matter what magic Porsche puts into these R, RS or any GT models... I always want the Turbo S far more.

I'll take this over any BMW. Especially in that white/red stripe color combo.

Here's how the beauty sounds:

Porsche wanted to be this the hommage to the old 911 R, of which there are only 20 pieces AFAIK and also had the same stripes as the R (red, green, and the bottom black one). So that's why it is so limited.

Mr. Preuninger is the man!!!

Just a thought:

There were days where the top-of-the-line Porsches were the "Turbo" models. It now seems like the range topping models are powered by NA engine and all the lower range variants are turbo powered. Funny how the world changes .

Nostalgia and feel plays into this... Porsche knows this and takes advantage of this...

FYI... the fastest 911 is still a turbo car... both in a straight line and around most tracks. The only Porsche that is faster and more higher end happens to be a hybrid...

This just easily made it's way up my list of all time favorite cars ever made.

It's a shame it'll be a unicorn.

I will bet a 991.2 carrera s with the right software and modest bolt-ons will push 500hp.

I kinda take the opposite position that the performance is closing. The 991.2 has gotten a few GT trickle downs, most notably the RWS. A saavy buyer who want the touring comforts but still straight-line power can simply buy a carrera, buy software and have near 90% performance of a GT3.

I have to applaud Porsche for listening to the enthusiasts on this one and putting out what is essentially a GT3 RS with a proper manual transmission. That being said, I think I would take a 997 GT3 RS 4.0 over the 991 R given the choice.

Another approach would be a "spec 996" such as the below

http://raceunderground.com/classifie...spec-race-car/

obviously it wouldn't have the straight line punch of the newer GT cars, but with 2700lb and $$ suspension mods (GT3 control arms, JRZ RS two coilovers, etc http://www.tarett.com/items/un-assig...996-detail.htm) it should be a lot of fun
