Economical? //M cars are not about economical. You want economical, you can slap a diesel and call it a day. //M cars are about being sportiness, racing, and exclusive line to those that want to differentiate between the "everyday" norm vs. prestige.

except in reality, they are about being economical

you cannot seriously believe that BMW makes ANY car for any other reason than to make money? this is not a one off race car, its a car that will be sold in large volumes across the world.

of course its about money. businesses exist for the sole purpose of making money

EDIT : I think I see what happened here. he said economical, you thought he meant gas mileage / cost of ownership. I think he means economical as in will the car be profitable to bmw

I think he meant economical in the sense of practicality, not fuel efficiency.

First BMW I ever drove was an e46 xi wagon in northern michigan in the middle of a hellish winter. My ML320 was in the shop for over a month with electrical issues. At the end of the month I was ready to tell them to keep the ML because the wagon was like a sports car with small SUV usefulness. I certainly vote for the wagon!!!

So roughly 85% of Bimmerpost member will choose a wagon over GTer.

There's your statistic BMW.

True, but in reality the enthousiasts (bimmerpost members and others) only consist of a smaller percentage of the M buyers. So it's the other world around. Here you'd have 85% that would buy an M GT over a wagon. I would even dare to say most M buyers don't use their car at more than 30% of the powerrange. So why would the M3 GT not make sense then? I see this being a big seller for the 50/60+ crowd in Europe.

My wife is eyeing the new 3-series wagon right now, and I guarantee that if the M3 version were available she'd take it in a heartbeat over that little 4-cyl wheezer.

The N20 is nothing to scoff at my friend. You should really drive one with X drive if you want to know for yourself. Plus, with just a few mods I am in 335 numbers.

Simply because it shares the same LWB chassis with the probably comming F86 M4GC ... the F81M3 needs an comlete new M developed (and produced) rear axis and this is much more costly than simply adapting the M4 GC for the M3 GT !!!

So if an F86 M4 GranCoupe is comming than the F84 M3 GT is simply the logical and realistic counterpart ... if the BMW AG would have the will to spend the money to develop and produce an F81M3 Touring than the M3/M4 would have get first an other engine ... either an 3.0ltr.V6TT, an 4.0ltr.V8TT - both based on the S63Tü or an modified S65 4.0ltr.V8 HDZ.
Yeah... but the F31 shares the same basic chassis as the F30, F31, and F32 (in the same way the 4er GC and 3er GT share the same chassis). Therefore it would be even cheaper to use the F31 because the standard chassis already has such a vast economy of scale. The LWB chassis is only used on the LWB China only 3er, 4er GC, 3er GT. Furthermore, it is not 100% clear that there will be a M4 GC.

Basically, look at this way, the F34 would require a lot more engineering work than the F31.

I agree the N20 is a pearl of an engine. I almost bought a 328i Touring. But once I caressed the throttle attached to an N55, there was no looking back. It's an aural delight, and I love the silky smoothness of an I6.

Something I was thinking of for the near future. My future wife is thinking Mini Countryman S manual. I am thinking something bigger like the wagon. Makes more sense when you have family.
