Both cars look good. These pictures are much better than the e90/f80 m3 comparison. However, I find myself liking the e92 more (especially the interior, just personal preference) but perhaps when I see the f82 in person I will change my mind.

M4 all the way. Love the interior with real carbon fiber, contrasting stitching with the leather, LED headlights, etc. The new M4 looks great!

F82 is a winner for me in every category! Except that color

Jason, the performance part of this comparison as you are presenting it is futile as long as what truly differentiates the two cars is not taken into account. That is the character, response and refinement of the engine. For example comparing a NA engine HP to a turbo engine HP is missing a whole dimension and that is when and how early in time after pressing the pedal do you get that power measured in quantified numerical way. And, does the car have to be in a lively driving bout previously in order to get it all so that the turbo lag can be masked ? how is the car behaving when that turbo turbine is not spinning fast enough is it going to behave like a puny 3.0 liter engine with low static compression ? Those peak horsepower and peak torque are useless (curves also) if not taken in conjunction with the throttle response at every RPM.
I have to say politely that the way you are approaching the comparison is biased. Since everything that makes this M4 undesirable is not transpiring (throttle response, artificially "enhanced" engine sound in the cabin, electric steering). What makes this M4 questionable is the engine of course but also there are big questions about reliability of a 335is inspired engine platform for a track car. And what about direct injection related issues like blow off gases leading to carbon deposits on the intake valves. This is a well known problem of this type of engine configuration and it will eventually rob the engine of its power unless taken apart for active cleaning. The advantage of a NA engine is that the throttle response is there all the time, you get that peak power instantaneously. Even if a turbo engine had an ideal response it can only approach the NA engine response but in reality it never does because forced induction is a compromise of natural throttle response and linear engine power delivery for torque and smaller displacment. The torque curve presented sofar are single dimensional (only RPM is considered) and always assume max instantaneous torque which is simply never the case for a turbo engine. This is a trump comparison. ( I am not talking about looks, which is a subjective thing). Last edited by V8FunNaturally; 12-20-2013 at 12:31 AM.. |

The E92 aged really well. When the E46 was outgoing, it looked soft - though in fairness it looked fairly soft when new after we became used to the power dome and quad exhaust. The E92 M still looks menacing and gorgeous, particularly with the 359Ms

E9x fail
E9x M3 doesn't have the extra look / presence that I want from a M car. The new M4 does and the E46 M3 still has.

You are certainly free to speculate and give your own thoughts but to suggest that a subjective opinion should be part of a purposely objective comparison is off base. |

On topic though, the only thing I like better concerning the F82 is the interior. The exterior goes to the E92, no questions asked every single angle. It just looks sharper, more to the point. The F82 looks kind of soft in comparison. & the E92 screams elegance, something the F82 does not do at all. The F82 looks too busy, especially the front end. The designer seems like he had too much fun with it, almost as if he or she is a talented teenager. & the goddamn Bimmer-Rangs! Another thing I cannot stand is the greenhouse.. From a 3/4 rear view it almost looks like a small, 2-door crossover. Mini X6M? Attachment 953420 Give me an E92, with the interior, weight & CCB's of an F82 and we have a winner. |
