Ripple door trim
Hey guys new(to me) 2018 M4 convertible CP owner here - technically a week ago I bought it and drove it from the Sacramento area back to Denver via AZ/NM. Mostly a fun drive but ran into snow and ice on the way back.
Anyway, the car is in pristine shape except for one thing that I can find. Both the seller and I do not recall the trim on the drivers door separating from the plastic beneath creating this terrible looking bubbly rippling effect. It would have been super obvious to me when checking over the car the way I did; even my wife noticed it within 30 seconds of her seeing it for the first time. So what I’m curious about is if anyone has seen this happen before. I already have a visit to the shop scheduled to get it replaced under warranty, but it bugs me that this happened. The only thing I can think is that the cold temperature one night must have caused an expansion contraction issue between the plastic and the black chrome-type material on top. See photos below. Oh, an I threw in a shot when I was able to put the top down and crank the heat a little. Last edited by Hoppyumr; 12-19-2020 at 04:26 PM.. |

That's crazy. It looks just like someone left protective plastic film on it (like my stainless fridge).

Well, I’m glad to hear it isn’t a common thing (this far), otherwise I’d be more worried about the other side or even the future replacement doing the same thing. Temperature shouldn’t do that, but I don’t know what else would have.
I can say positively there is no protective film. Rubbing your finger down the length of it the ripples move under the pressure, but you can feel it is fairly thick. |

he must have left it parked outside with the top down. really odd. only thing i can think of is direct sun on a hot day hitting that piece.

The car is at the dealer currently getting the trim piece replaced under warranty. Hopefully I'll get it back tomorrow before weather gets worse again. |

Same issue in my F82 M4 2018.
I live in Korea and found that same thing on the left door after 6 days parking outside in a very cold weather. And I found another guy who has same issue in Korea too. I collect these cases and will show my service adviser soon. |

lol finally someone with the same issue but yours is way far worse. ill upload pics once i go out to the car. but i have the same issue on my back seat trim i just bought the car also 2 weeks ago and i think its from sitting in the LOTs under the sun cuz i just looks like wrap to me. i took it in to the deal and they told me that the trim cant be taken off n just easily replaced that the whole panel has to be removed and order. so they did under warranty they also found 1 injector that needed cleaning and changed my squeaky breaks along with a small coolant leak they said they found. all under warranty

I would tend to think it is a batch issue where the trim parts weren't prepared correctly before getting the metalized chrome treatment. What month year were your cars manufactured? I'll look mine up and edit this post once I know. Edit - my '18 car was made 7/17. |

I suppose you could always wrap them in something. Apparently the "chrome" they use can be scratched, so I'm not sure hire much that would be different if you wrapped in some of the fake CF stuff I see people use on various things. Probably look pretty cool in CF. To be honest, I'm not sure why I haven't seen this be a thing that's out on Aliexpress. I would imagine the dealer had to remove the entire door panel to replace the trim price. I'm sure they didn't replace the entire panel on mine, just the trim piece. |

update : dropped off my car at the dealer for this backseat gloss chrome trim repair. hope it comes out good, and hope that other trim parts dont start to fail. took a month to get the part in from factory. but they are replacing the full back trim panel where your arm rest. which is cool but lil bit to much i thought at first. just take the dam trim off n pop on a new one lol

Had my car in for something else last week and brought this issue up to the service advisor. BMW ended up replacing it under warranty. I did mention this forum thread, not sure if that swayed them. Might also be the service advisor. When I first brought it in just for that trim piece, the service advisor said they can only do a 'good faith' repair and that I would have to pay half. Now, with a different advisor, it get taken care of completely free of charge. I don't know if this will help anyone, but I figured I'd just post the update, just in case.
