Horrible Tuning Experience

I bought my F80 last year pre owned with 10k miles.

I went to install BM3 and it locked my cars DME and bricked my car. I had no idea what had happened and went into panic mode. Little did I know the previous owner did not inform me that car had been tuned.

So after having car towed to local BMW authorized BM3 shop they informed me the DME was fried and I would need another DME. so I had car towed to BMW dealership and they looked at the car to see what they could do. Cars DME was only locked and they were able to reverse it back to prior state.

I have super bad luck when it comes to nice things and it seems something always goes wrong. I cant decide on what I want to do now and was curious to people's thoughts and if anyone has had an experience with their DME like me? Car is fine now and at home again.

If you have bad luck with stuff like this then you shouldn't be doing it lol.

Sell the BMW and buy an Audi. Since it is not as nice you should be sweet.

However assuming you are willing to risk nice things and now you know the state of the DME you should be good to pick one of the mainstream tuners. Just don't search for SCH on this forum as with your elevated risk profile (or luck) you may decide not to tune it

Congrats on the purchase of the new beast

It's nice to see BMW fixing it tbh.

Whoever told you that your DME fried is a clown. Leave that shop asap.

Always a bit nerve racking flashing any ECU!
I had Performance Eurowerks in Buffalo Grove, IL flash my car.
They are an authorized BM3, MHD, and EcuTek custom tuner.
Although you already purchased BM3, I am sure they'd be willing to help flash the car for a nominal fee. They also have a DynoJet 4WD dyno to validate results!

How did they come to the conclusion that the DME was fried?

Did you contact PTF directly? trying to tune an already tuned car does not fry your DME or even lock it. From what you have mentioned, it sounds like you need to go to another shop

My bill was just over $500 bucks. Literally took them 2 hours. Just reset the cars ecu. They couldn't cover that under warranty which was fine. They were very helpful and extremely generous at the dealership.

Cheaper than a new DME he was quoted at the "BM3 authorized shop"though, right? ISTA recovered the DME no problem so that's a win/win.

Could’ve been done free through bm3 tech support and probably even way quicker than 2 hours. Going some random shops and dealers for help with this stuff is just a bad idea. Live and learn I guess as always
